Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every  Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7pm. Admission  is $5 on Tuesday and $6 on Saturday. Line Dancing classes are also offered on Monday nights beginning at 6pm. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Local blue grass and old time musicians jam each Monday, 2 blocks north of the Courthouse at the Crouse House in Crouse Park, beginning at 6pm. Come and play or just listen. No charge, but a donation is appreciated. 336-372-5473

Shop Sparta 
The town of Sparta offers a variety of art galleries, apparel and accessory stores, gift shops, restaurants and even an old fashioned hardware store. Click here to learn more about the merchants in Sparta. 
  
Barn Quilt Trails 

Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10am to 5pm. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
 at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee every Wednesday from 8:30-11am. All veterans are invited to attend.  Click to learn more .
 
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10am-2pm, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 US Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Merchant Meeting

The town and Chamber would like to invite downtown merchants to a communication campaign meeting about the streetscape this  Thursday at 5:30pm at the

Free Design Request

The Sparta Revitalization Committee offers a
free Design Request for any Merchants on Main Street. This service shows what your building could look like if it was remodeled back to its historic setting.

D.A.N.A will be holding a candlelight vigil on the Court House lawn on October 5th from 5:00 PM until 7:30 PM.

Alleghany County Rescue Squad 

Food sales will begin at  9 AM until 1 PM on
October 7th at 61 Trojan Avenue Sparta  NC 28675 , including chopped pork BBQ with sauce, 1/2 lb. and 1 lb. cups, sandwiches, BBQ chicken 1/2 or whole, cole slaw will be sold with the chopped pork BBQ.

Republican Party Meeting


The Alleghany Co. Republican Party will hold its monthly meeting at 6 pm on October 5th at the VFW Post 7034, Hwy 21 S., Sparta. Our guest speaker will be Kenneth Vaught, the Veterans Service Officer for Alleghany Co. Also, Jeffrey Elmore, N.C. House of Representative will be present to answer questions concerning Legislature activities and the redistricting.

2017 READ

The 2017 READ Committee will have tickets on sale
Wednesday, October 11th for the
'Dimestore Luncheon with Lee Smith'. A limited number of tickets will be sold at
Books n Friends beginning at 10 am. Each ticket costs
$20 and
only cash can be accepted. The Luncheon will be held November 11th at the Mustard Seed café.

Democratic Party Meeting

The Democratic Party will hold their monthly meeting, October 12, 2017 at Kanpai Restaurant. Meet and great will begin at 6:00 pm. You may order dinner (optional - Dutch Treat) and the meeting will begin at 6:30 pm.

Thursday, October 5 - 6:00 pm - Astro Photography Program - (Presented by Dave Collings representing Echo Ridge Astronomical Society.  Dave's Astro Photo of 'The Sunflower Galaxy' has recently been published in Sky and Telescope Magazine  for October 2017.  This magazine has over 100,000 subscriptions sold.)  

Saturday, October 7 - Multicultural Day, Hispanic Event - A collaborative effort between the library, Wilkes Community College, and the Business Development Center. F ree flu shots will be given by WalGreens for the Hispanic farm workers who have no insurance.

New River State Park Upcoming Activities

New River State Park: River Run / Hickory Trail
October 7, 2017, 02:00 pm- Approx. 03:00 pm:
Join a Ranger at the Highway 221 visitor center, and learn what makes the New River one of the oldest in the world.  The hike will take us on a moderate trail winding through pine forest that lead to the river's edge, and then travels back to the visitor center with oaks and hickories overhead.

Fall Wildflower Hike: Saturday, October 7, 2017 - 1:00pm, Wagoner Access - Contact Station:
Join Master Gardener Laurie on a 1-mile hike to view the last of the fall wildflowers of New River State Park.  It is recommended to dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes and bring water.
