Horizon Bistro Welcomes Award-Winning Author S.E. Smith

S.E. 'Susan' Smith, New York Times and USA Today best-selling author, will appear on stage at the
Horizon Bistro,Saturday, May 5th, at 3 PM. The Bistro is located at 38 S. Main Street, Sparta, NC, in the historic Smithey Building.
Smith's appearance in Sparta was organized by Alleghany Writers and is part of the new schedule of first Saturday performances on the Horizon Bistro stage.
3 PM- Writers At the Bistro- Local talent, regional names, national best sellers.
8 PM- Acting up at the Bistro- Trojan Playmakers take the stage for short plays, monologues, and improv.

Wildflower Hike
Saturday, May 5th @ 2:00 p.m.; Wagoner Access – Ranger Station
Join a ranger for a short hike along the New River and a mountain cove habitat in search of May wildflowers, ferns, and trees. Wear good walking shoes and bring a bottle of water. Feel free to bring your camera as well, to capture the beauty, and leave it for others to enjoy. Don't forget to log your hike, if you are working towards you 100 miles in the 100 -mile challenge. Tips and Tactics of Fishing the New River

Meet a Ranger at Wagoner Access Area at 1pm for a program on Fishing the New River. Discussion topics include Gear and bait choices, boating / river safety, fish species, and licensing requirements.
100 Mile Challenge Hike
Saturday, May 12th @ 10:00 a.m.; 221 Access - Visitor Center
Need to add a few miles to your log? Join a State Ranger at the visitor center off of Highway 221 in the New River State Park for a 2.4-mile hike. It is recommended to where sturdy shoes, dress for the weather and bring a water bottle. Don't forget to log your hike, if you are working towards you 100 miles in the 100 -mile challenge. Local blue grass and old time musicians jam each Monday, 2 blocks north of the Courthouse at the Crouse House in Crouse Park, beginning at 6pm. Come and play or just listen. No charge, but a donation is appreciated. 336-372-5473

Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7pm. Admission is $5 on Tuesday and $6 on Saturday. Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
