Stallions in the Spotlight

Congratulations to senior Joseph Paugh for qualifying as a Semifinalist in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. As a Semifinalist, he is one of approximately 16,000 high school seniors who will have the opportunity to continue in the competition to earn a National Merit Scholarship next spring. We are also pleased to announce that Justin Braun, Abbey Dop, and Kyle Moon have been named Commended Students in the  2018 National Merit Scholarship Program. All of these outstanding students are being recognized for the exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their performance on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October.

Seniors J ansen Bennett and Zach Koller volunteered at the Claremont Retirement Village where they assisted with entertainment (like calling Bingo - pictured!) and visiting with residents.

Senior Ricardo Volley won the first SFD Fishing Club Tournament at Liberty Park this past weekend.

"Giving the Last Lecture" is a shortened version of the "Last Lecture" presented by Professor Hums by invitation of ND Student Government in 2010 in Washington Hall. It is modeled after the original "Last Lecture" presented by Dr. Randy Pausch at Carnegie Mellon in 2007 several months before he died. "Last Lecture" asks the speaker to answer one question in the form of an engaging public lecture: "If this were your last time to address a group of students, what would you say?" In Dr. Randy Pausch's lecture he talks of how to enable your own dreams and helping others achieve their dreams. Please click here for more information about this free event.
First Impressions

The first of five etiquette modules will be held  Wednesday, October 18th from  3:15pm to 4:15pm in the Franciscan Center. These modules, sponsored by the Business Club and presented by Cathi Fallon, founder of the Etiquette Institute of Ohio, are free for Business Club members, otherwise, cost $10.00 per module payable at the door.

The first module is First Impressions. With every new encounter, you are evaluated and yet another person's impression of you is formed. These first impressions can be nearly impossible to reverse or undo, making those first encounters extremely important, for they set the tone for all the relationships that follow.

Business Club members should respond to an Evite sent to all members. Non-Business Club members need to email Mr. Montenaro to reserve a spot. Light snacks and drinks are served.
French Exchange at SFD

The World Languages Department at DeSales High School is pleased to announce the annual exchange program with our sister school in Normandy, France. In this year's exchange, students from Institution Saint Joseph in Le Havre, France will come to Columbus for two weeks in mid February 2018 (February 17 - March 2, subject to adjustment). They will be hosted by DeSales families, visit Watterson and DeSales classes and go to cultural, educational, historical, sports and entertainment venues in and around Columbus.

Therefore we are in need of families who would be willing to host a student in their home during their visit. There is no fee associated with hosting a French Exchange student; all that needs to be provided is a place to stay, meals with your family and a sack lunch on most days. The Exchange students will report each day to DeSales with your current student and depart with them at the end of the day.

Please contact Mrs. Heather Evans if you are interested in hosting a student at evans@desales.co or your student can see her in room 121 to receive the necessary paperwork.
