Stallions in the Spotlight

Representatives from St. Francis DeSales High School's Fall Sports teams gathered on August 18 to put together snack bags and toiletry care packages, which were then delivered to the children at the Run the Race Club in downtown Columbus.

DeSales' Run the Race Support Club's advisor Sarah Gantz thought this would be a great service project for the SFD student-athletes to participate in as they begin a new school year. Fellow teachers Jean Garrick and Jack Welsh worked with Mrs. Gantz and the Run the Race Club's founder, Rachel Muha, to identify needs of the children that attend the Run the Race Club. Rachel explained, "There is something we need all year round: snack bags filled with 3 or 4 small snacks that the children can take home to have on the weekend or to take to school if they are allowed. Our children are always hungry." She continued, "The other things our children need are toiletries: small bottles of shampoo, deodorant, lotion, and band aids."

With the support of coaches, athletes, and their families, the group assembled 300 snack packs, filling medium-size ziplock bags with a granola bar, fruit roll-up, and a drink box, and filled a moving box full of toiletries. Not only did this service initiative show the Run the Race Club kids that someone is thinking of them, it also taught the SFD student-athletes an important life lesson that with teamwork much can be achieved!

Athlete of the Week

Each week during the sports seasons, SFD coaches nominate players to be honored as the St. Francis DeSales Athlete of the Week.  Every  Tuesday we'll announce the recipients - athletes who have shined in recent games, whether it be hitting a game-winning shot or playing lock-down defense, piling up points or a record-setting performance. A special thanks to Sam '82 and Patrick Chapman '84 of the Farmers Insurance Group for sponsoring the SFDHS Athlete of the Week.

Congratulations to Bella D'Amico (Volleyball) and Rob Landis (Golf) who were named this week's Athletes of the Week! Click on their name (above) for a write up of their accomplishments!

Friends in the Courtyard this Fall!

While sampling premium wines and craft beers, you can participate in the silent and live auction plus the "Reverse Raffle" for a chance to $1,000 plus other interval drawings to win fabulous prizes. Proceeds from this event provide financial support for SFDHS co-curricular programs including athletics, band drama, and over 30 scholastic and interest-based clubs.

ATTENTION: CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMS
To eliminate multiple fund raisers needed for co-curricular programs, you are asked to participate in the two major event fund raisers.  In the fall, Friends in the Courtyard and in the spring, Casino Royale.   Co-curricular programs will receive 100% of the net proceeds from the sale of the live or silent auction which were procured by that co-curricular program.    Each co-curricular program is asked to donate at least one silent or live auction item per 15-20 team or club members to Friends in the Courtyard.  Ask people you know best; friends, family, or businesses.  When soliciting to businesses, please use the approved  event letter and  donation form  (please find link below) provided by the Office of Institutional Advancement.  For businesses or individuals to receive a tax benefit from the donation, you will need to include the information on the donation form.  Contact Pat Murphy in the Advancement department for more information regarding items needed for the event at patmurphy@desales.co .

Turn in all items to the Institutional Advancement department located in the Franciscan Center. All items turned in need to have a donation form.  The following are the  3 incentive turn-in dates  for live or silent auction items: Wednesday, August 30Friday, September 8 and Friday, September 22.  For each basket/item turned in on or before the announced date, your program will be put in a drawing for a $250 grant.    For more information or questions about the event, email Michele Moriarty at  moriarty@desales.co .
