Church 'Spruce Up' August 4th to 9th

We will be re-painting the back wall of the chancel and four of the classrooms during the first week in August.  A poster showing the new chancel colors is on display Sundays in the narthex or social hall.  If you can volunteer some help that week, please sign up online by clicking here. We hope to see you there!

If you have any additional questions, email Bill McTeer or Lynne Stanley.

We extend our gratitude to the Association of Universalist Women (AUW) for generously donating the funds to paint the chancel.

Foundation Board Vacancy

Dear Congregants,

On behalf of the Nominating Committee, I am writing to let you know we have a mid-term opening for a Director on our Foundation Board at First Universalist Church.  According to our bylaws, in the case of a midyear resignation, we must notify our congregation in writing.  The Nominating Committee then identifies an interim Director, subject to Board of Trustees' approval.  The new Director's interim term will extend through June 2015 with eligibility to be elected for a three-year term at our Annual Meeting in June.  Specifics about the role and application process are briefly described below. A detailed position description is available upon request.

The vacancy occurred due to Molly Darsow's resignation.   We are grateful to Molly for her contribution to the Foundation over the past year.

Mission of the First Universalist Foundation: to act as a catalyst for social change by promoting and supporting the development of emerging leaders among youth, young adults, and disenfranchised communities through monetary grants to and partnerships with nonprofits working in those communities.

Position responsibilities: The nine Directors of the First Universalist Foundation are church members who: monitor the financial status of the Foundation and ensure that applicable policies and laws are being followed; participate in the screening and selection of grant requests; maintain relationships with organizations currently receiving grants, including occasional site visits; review and deliberate - and, when needed, vote - on all matters and materials brought before the Foundation Board at its monthly meetings.  The Foundation meets on the 4th Tuesday of each month.

Application process: Complete the on-line application and submit it to the Nominating Committee. Send an email to ginny.mc1947@gmail.com if you are interested and a link will be provided.

Deadline for Application:  July 21, 2014.

If you have questions, please feel free to call me at 612-824-4624.

Sincerely,

Ginny McAninch
Chair, Nominating Committee

Handy Helper Needed

Help an elderly Minneapolis resident remain safely in their home. Volunteer your time to assist with MINOR REPAIRS. Snowbirds, retirees, and trainees welcome (over the age of 18). You must have some experience to ensure that the work is done correctly (license not required). Choose your own unpaid handyperson schedule. Adult individuals, two-person teams, and small groups welcome.

Exact location TBD in Minneapolis, depends upon where the senior citizen resides. One-time unpaid volunteer opportunities are also available. Please contact Jeanne the NIP Seniors Program, Volunteer Coordinator at:

srvolunteer@neighborhoodinvolve.org or call 612-746-8549 for more information. Our website is www.neighborhoodinvolve.org

Senior citizens who reside in Minneapolis and need a handyperson should call 612-374-3322 or email seniors@neighborhoodinvolve.org for more information. Outside of Minneapolis, contact the Senior Linkage Line at 1-800-333-2433 for details. Thank you!

Lake Harriet Bandshell on August 3rd at 10am!

Join us for an energizing worship service and a potluck lunch at the Lake Harriet Bandshell on Sunday, August 3 at 10am.

The Universal Jazz Band may just blow the top off the bandshell!  Please bring a dish to share and your own dishes/utensils.  This will be our only worship service that Sunday.

Let Them Know You Care

Looking for a small, yet powerful way to make a difference? Send a card to someone experiencing a significant joy or sorrow in their life.  Each Sunday, we honor those who are experiencing a major life transition during our worship service and in our printed Cycle of Life.  To extend a gesture of care and connection, write them a card in the Welcome Center, which is the small room in the atrium located between the social hall and the education wing.  Simply select a card, write a caring message, and drop it in the basket provided.

Art Exhibit in Social Hall

ART EXHIBIT:  Our Current exhibit in the Social Hall features fine art collage pieces by Madeleine Lowry.  This is a fundraiser for Camp Unistar and all artist proceeds from art sales will be donated to the Camp Unistar Foundation. The exhibit runs through August 31.

New Community Bookshelf and Little Free Library

The efforts of many First Universalist members and other volunteers have paid off: our church now has a new book-sharing bookshelf and a Little Free Library! Please bring in books of any genre that you want others to read, and enjoy the selection we already have. The construction and book drive were organized as an Eagle Project by Nathaniel Larson, a rising senior at Southwest High School and Senior High group member at First Universalist.

Thank you to all those who helped make this possible, including Welcome Jerde, Dan Bishop, Bill Lewis,  the SPIFF committee, the Library Committee, Justin Schroeder, and the members of Troop 33.

Water Communion:
September 7th

On Sunday, Sept 7, we will celebrate the UU tradition of Water Communion -- and now is not too early to collect your liquid offering. We certainly have enough water this summer to make it hard to choose your source. Gather up a few ounces of that precious liquid -- from Minnehaha Falls, your basement, your travels, the lake, or your favorite pool. Then, in the fall, bring your drops to join with the waters of our whole community in our Water Communion ingathering ritual.
