9/27/10
Approximately 6 p.m. 1500 block of 6th
Street
(Lewd
Conduct) A resident and her child were followed from McDonald's to
6th Street. When the suspect approached them, he grabbed
himself in the groin area. The suspect fled and the victim called
the police and was able to provide them with a licenses plate
number. Redondo Beach officers assisted and detained the suspect at
his residence. The suspect was positively identified and was
subsequently arrested.
Area

9/26/10
- 9/27/10 8 p.m. - 11:15 p.m.
400 block of 16th Street
(Burglary
from Garage) Unknown suspect(s) entered the victim's garage which
was believed to be closed and locked and stole two bicycles. There
were no signs of forced entry.
Area
9
9/24/10
- 9/25/10 10:30 p.m. - 7 a.m.
600 block of 29th Street
(Residential
Burglary) Unknown suspect(s) entered the residence which is being
renovated and removed the refrigerator from the kitchen. The
residence was locked but a spare key was left hidden for the
workers.
We
have also had three separate incidents of burglaries at local
churches including American Martyrs, Journey of Faith and the MB
Community Church. All incidents had similar MOs and no signs of
forced entry. It is most likely that suspect(s) are trying door
handles late at night, gaining entry and looking for small items.
They have left other valuable items behind. Vandalism has been
minimal and targeted at obtaining property that may be locked in
desks and cabinets.
Please
help spread the word to our local churches to double and triple
check their doors and windows to prevent further incidents. Thank
you.

FIRE CHIEF LANTZER'S
CORNER
This week is
Fire Prevention Week!!!
The theme for this
year's Fire Prevention Week is Smoke
Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With.
Smoke alarms are a
very important means of preventing home fire fatalities by
providing an early warning signal so you and your family can
escape. According to the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), an
estimated 385,500 fires occur in residential buildings every year
resulting in 2,770 civilian deaths and 13,250 injuries. When a
smoke alarm sounds, it is time for you to spring into
action.
You can prevent
tragedy simply by testing and maintaining your smoke alarms and
practicing a fire escape plan. Make sure your home fire escape
plan is up to date and everyone in the home knows what to do when
the smoke alarm sounds. Practice your plan often.
Visit http://www.usfa.dhs.gov/citizens/focus/smoke_alarms2010.shtm to watch an
educational video on smoke alarms and to test your smoke alarm
knowledge through an interactive quiz. You will also find links to
valuable fire prevention resources available from the
USFA.

You can reduce your chances for carjacking
by taking the following steps:
- Keep doors and windows locked when driving.
- When stopped, allow at least one car length
between you and the car in front of you. This allows you room to
maneuver, if it becomes necessary.
- If you can't drive away from a threatening
situation, draw attention to yourself-- honk your horn or yell.
Remain in your locked car if possible.
- Keep your purse and other valuables out of view
while driving.
- Drive in the center lane if possible to avoid
being pushed onto the shoulder.
- Don't stop at isolated pay phones or cash
machines.
- Keep a lookout if you see a stranger approaching
your car. If you're in the car, drive away as quickly as possible.
Walk away from the car if you're outside.
- Above all, don't resist an armed suspect. Your
car isn't worth risking personal injury.

Our evening classes
went quite well, and we're gearing up now for our next class in
October, National Preparedness Month. Our next class will be on,
October 9, 16, and 23, 2010. These are from 8AM to 4:30PM each
Saturday. One must attend all three days to complete the
course.
NOTE: We have room for 32 persons in the
class. The first 32 that email me and send in their checks to the
address at the bottom of the flyer are in. We've never come up
short yet.
The cost of the
Class has gone up as we have replaced one cheap gas wrench with
another more expensive multi tool in the back pack. It is now
$60.00 and you get back and out of this much
more.
For those of you
that are interested in your Red Cross 3 year First Aid Card, we
will set up an evening after you graduate to finish the
certification.. A small fee for the book and card may be paid
later. Also in November we will have a Red Cross CPR Training
session too.
Please feel free to
call me on my cell if you have any questions.

The
2010 Great California ShakeOut on October 21 is now less than one
month away, and already more than 5.2 million Californians
are registered to
participate.In
2009 this milestone was not reached until late
September!
To
make sure if you are listed as a participant for 2010, you can
visit www.ShakeOut.org/whoisparticipating to view
lists of participants by county or for the entire state.
If you
or your organization is not listed for 2010, please login today to easily update your
information and confirm your participation in this year's
drill.
Set
a reminder!
An
easy way to know when on October 21st to Drop, Cover, and Hold On
is to set an alarm on your phone or computer calendar for 10:21
a.m.! Your
organization may also use a more widespread alarm or announcement,
but your own alarm will help make sure you join the millions of
others who are practicing how to protect themselves.
T-shirts,
"2010 Participant" stickers, buttons, mugs, and
more...
The new
ShakeOut Shop has been created as a service to
ShakeOut participants who are requesting items to commemorate their
drills, spread preparedness messages, and encourage others to
participate. Proceeds
from each sale go to
support increasing preparedness
and participation
in the ShakeOut. In addition, your
organization can become a ShakeOutShop Affiliate, and receive 10% of
every purchase made by people who click a special
link on your site. This can be a great fundraiser for schools and
other groups!
Prepare, Protect, and
Recover!
The ShakeOut is an opportunity for us to prepare together, before a
major earthquake happens again in California. To help, we are
sending you preparedness tips each month, following the Seven Steps to Earthquake
Safety: Step 7: Communicate and Recover!
Following a major disaster, communication will be an important step
in your recover efforts. Turn on your portable radio for
information and safety advisories. If your home is damaged and you
have earthquake insurance, contact your insurance agent right away
to begin your claims process (your homeowner's insurance policy
does not cover damage from earthquakes!) The webpage for this step has basic instructions
what to do in the days and weeks after a major earthquake and what
to do if you must go to a shelter.
Who
will ShakeOut with you?
A
great way to help your friends, relatives, community, employer, and
others get prepared is to encourage them to register
to participate in the ShakeOut! Let them know you are
participating and ask them to join you. You can also
display posters, distribute flyers, and use other materials
available on the ShakeOut
Resources page.
We're
all in this together...
The
ShakeOut has grown because of people like you, who see the value of
practicing how to protect ourselves and for getting prepared. We
have formed the Earthquake Country Alliance to
foster an earthquake and tsunami resilient California. If you have
similar commitments please join the Alliance.
Thank
you for your participation and commitment to earthquake
safety!
When Disaster Strikes, it's too
late to prepare.

"Map Your Neighborhood" (MYN) is
a program designed to help neighborhoods prepare for disasters. It
is a program that HBNW has adopted and highly encourages Block
Captains to attend a class and implement the program on their
street.
MYN will help you to:
-
Learn the "9 Steps
to Take Immediately Following a Disaster" to secure your home and
to protect your neighborhood. It is hard to think clearly following
disaster and these steps will help you to quickly and safely take
actions that can minimize damage and protect lives.
- Identify the Skills and Equipment each
neighbor has that would be useful in an effective disaster
response. Knowing which neighbors have supplies and skills helps
your disaster response be timely, and allows everyone to contribute
to the response in a meaningful way.
- Create a Neighborhood
Map identifying the locations of natural gas for quick response if
needed.
- Create a Contact List
that helps identify those with specific needs such as elderly,
disabled, or children who may be home alone during certain hours of
the day.
-
Work together as a team to evaluate
your neighborhood during the first hour following a disaster and
take the necessary actions.
