Color Study provides a lively discourse between contemporary and historical works and tackles a variety of critical issues surrounding color. The works in this exhibition use color as their primary means of expression. Whatever their stance on these issues, the artists in Color Study all share a steadfast devotion to the exploration of color. For these artists, color is not a mere descriptor; instead, it is a provocative and powerful force. More details here.

Work of the Week: July 7, 2011
Tom Dimond's Shamus Tabriz (ca. 1975)
| Tom Dimond (1944 - ) Shamus Tabriz, circa 1975.
Acrylic painting on canvas, 49 x 49 inches.
Museum Purchase with funds provided by the N.E.A.
Asheville Art Museum Collection. 1976.14.24.
Born in 1944 in Massachusetts, artist Tom Dimond developed an interest in painting early in life. According to the artist, at the young age of eight he was first intrigued by a puzzle included in the comics section of a local newspaper that involved reproducing a series of short lines to create a recognizable image in the form of a grid. This early inspiration is evident in Dimond's geometric art. Other influences include Tibetan tantric paintings, Bostonian architecture and signage, and the sacred geometry, surface and colors of the 15th century Florentine painter, Paolo Uccello. These early influences can be seen in Shamus Tabriz (ca. 1975) on view in Color Study, opening Saturday, July 9 in the Museum's Appleby Foundation Gallery. Continue reading here... |
July 2011 Shop Artist of the Month:
Anna Jensen
|
The Asheville Art Museum is pleased to highlight our Museum Shop Artist of the month: Anna Jensen. Stop by the Museum to explore Anna's hand-painted ornaments, trinket boxes, note cards and more.
Anna moved to Asheville from New York City and exhibits her work often. She recently presented her work at The Museum's Pecha Kucha night.
In describing her work Anna states,
"I use disparate painting styles to create emotionally complex narratives. I combine references to art history, pop culture, natural science, and personal chronicles to represent the conflicts of life. Like me, the stories are at once equal parts funny and sad."
Anna's work will be featured in the Museum Shop through July. Be sure to check out Anna's website at www.annajensenart.com.
