This morning, as James and I head off to vacation, I happened to read a little bit of Isaiah:

In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and confidence shall be your strength.

Today, we will be returning for a few weeks to our simple cottage in Brooklin, one of the idylls in our busy world. I'm good at returning there....and I promise to pay attention to resting and being quiet. I do have confidence that the beauty of the familiar includes certain restoration and refreshment, strengths and savings from the intensities of work.

It won't surprise you that even the joys of my ministries at St. Alban's come with demands and cares. Thank you for giving me and my family this good time for returning and rest. My prayer is that you and yours may also know some quietness and confidence in these awesome summer days.

Blessings and thanks,

Greater Portland Family Promise Celebrates One Year: You are invited to participate in this life-changing ministry

July 9 was the one year anniversary of Greater Portland Family Promise opening its doors to welcome the very first GPFP guest family.
Saint Alban's is a ministry partner with St. Batholomew's Roman Catholic Church of Cape Elizabeth and the Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church as families are hosted at CEUMC four times each program year.  To date, this interfaith and ecumenical ministry in the greater Portland area has served 18 families or 68 individuals. Three families are currently in the program. Ten families have graduated into housing.

Of the families, we have served thus far,
*83% of families are newly arrived immigrants
*54% of individuals are children under 18
*51% of children are ages 5 and under

Families served have identified as coming from the following countries: Angola, Burkina Faso, Zambia, Morocco, DR Congo, and the United States.

We are deeply grateful for the care, support, and work of the volunteers from St. Alban's who have dedicated so much to this program over this past year.

St. Alban's next hosting date is coming up: August 12- 19. In order to work directly with families in this program, volunteers must complete a training organized by Greater Portland Family Promise. If you would like to attend the training, registration ahead of time is not necessary. The next training is on Sunday, July 22nd, from 1:00-4:00 pm at Saint Luke's Episcopal Cathedral, Portland (parking lot at 134 Park Street).

We are grateful for the volunteers who have chosen to make Family Promise a part of their lives--the volunteers who cook food, make beds, play with children, stay overnight, donate furniture and clothing, serve on our board and committees, help families move into apartments, and so much more. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Please contact the Rev. Holly Clark, our Assistant Rector, or Deborah Phelan if you are interested in learning more about this important, life-changing ministry.

Make A Difference

Jubilee Center/Essentials Pantry Summer Update
Our straw baskets for donations have been overflowing, thanks to all of you.

Toothbrushes and Toothpaste
The Essentials Pantry/Jubilee Center is in need of individually wrapped toothbrushes and toothpaste.  Consider picking up a package or two at the drugstore, and when next visiting your dentist, ask if he or she could spare a couple of  samples given to patients. When a dentist was asked recently, he promptly offered a case of sample size tubes of toothpaste!
It never hurts to ask.
