Making A Difference
Jubilee Center/Essentials Pantry

Days are getting longer but the need for warm clothing to keep guests at the Essentials Pantry dry and warm will continue for a while.  Especially needed are clothes and footwear for men and boys.  Always in high demand are household items such as  linens, cookware, dishes and cutlery, and small appliances.  Household donations that can easily be carried away by newcomers to our country are most welcome.  Before you take unwanted items to Goodwill, the Salvation Army or  the Swap Shop, think about dropping them off in the straw baskets at church instead.   Thank you.

Late Winter Reflection,
Sunday Mornings after coffee

The Rev. Jonathan Appleyard

An opportunity to reflect during a season of conflicting forces: ice hardening and earth stirring; staid habits and demonstrations of hope; doors closing and doors opening. As people of faith, we wrestle with the question, "How do we put faith ("To act justly, to love mercy, to walk humbly with your God," Micah 6:8) into practice."
Jonathan Appleyard will gather with us in the pews as we share with one another and look for signs of God's movement.
You are welcome to come for one or all on Sunday mornings after coffee on
February 26, and March 5

The season of Epiphany, of the Light of Jesus sprung into the world, comes to a close in the week ahead. This Sunday is the last of Epiphany, and then on Tuesday we'll keep a longstanding ritual of the Shrove Tuesday/Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras blowout feast! (6 pm!)
Shrove Tuesday is an inheritance from the subsistence agriculture days of our forebears, when about this time of year the food was running low. In a final celebration, the last of the fats were eaten up, and we entered Ash Wednesday and the fasting of Lent.
Even with those agricultural days having faded away, we are left with the gift of this slow, thoughtful time. Where our ancestors took stock of their lives and larders, we can to the same, if with a twist.

Jan Schrock with children in China whose education is supported by Heifer International rabbits and training.

Our parish Lenten devotion this year is the Heifer Project International "Fill the Ark" Calendar. Look for your own calendar and "ark box" on your way into church this Sunday. Heifer has been taking stock of folks tangible and spiritual needs since 1944, and responding with Life in the form of chickens, seeds, cows, llamas, rabbits and all manner of appropriate animals. Their calendar is a playful daily guide for looking both inward to our own households and outward to our global neighbors. And it helps us build connections across that distance with both our hearts and hands.
This practice will continue the spirit of our annual youth trips to the Heifer Farm in Rutland, MA, and shares the spirit of our relationship with St. Luc's in Haiti. We'll also be graced on March 19th with the presence of Guest Speaker Janet Schrock, daughter of Heifer founder Dan West, and a leader herself in Heifer. At the coming of Holy Week, we will gather and offer up the fruits of our practice.
God of Creation, give us hearts of stillness and hearts of Life this Lent. Draw us inward and draw us outward, and all this in harmony with your Spirit, hand in hand with Christ, and for your glory. Amen.

Yours in Christ,

Message from John Hartley and the Vestry
The St Alban's spiritual community is very fortunate to have a wonderful hospitality ministry, which brings our faith community together over various coffees and talks and                                       The Shrove Tuesday Breakfast  -- evidenced by consistently high attendance and enthusiastic volunteers.  This breakfast has become a parish cornerstone event, offering friendly fellowship and delicious breakfast offerings and at a price that's hard to beat!  We have set the suggested donation for the breakfast at $5 a person or $15 per family.  This price is designed to cover the base cost of the food necessary to make the breakfast.  It is our goal is to continue this tradition of affordable, family-friendly social opportunities which deepen our personal connections.
The volunteer cooks, slicers and bakers generously donate their time to thoughtfully plan, shop for and prepare these special breakfasts, and it is increasingly important that all attendees gladly pitch in the treasure required to make it all possible.
We need your ongoing financial support to meet the increasing cost of food supplies,  we want to make it all as simple and straightforward as possible.
Please know we will continue to offer the basket for cash and check donations, but we will also offer another payment option and are excited to offer a pay by debit card utilizing Square, which is easy, safe and secure.  You will be able to quickly swipe your debit of credit card at the Shrove Tuesday  to pay for yourself or your family.  As with all things, and would love to hear your feedback about the breakfast, the cost and the new payment option at [email protected]

Wendy Pannier and Tallulah Lyons head the Cancer Project for the International Association for the Study of dreams. Anyone interested in cancer and the connection to dreams, will find enlightening the book Talllulah Lyons wrote called Dreams and Guided Imagery.  This book follows a cancer support group as they come to understand the power of their dreams. Over time, their insights into themselves and their support for each other facilitate notable healing. Importantly, Lyons points out that healing is not necessarily the same thing as a cure.
