Bible Appreciation
Date Change and
Other News

Because of a conflict with the original dates for several people participating in the Bible Appreciation study for adults, the remaining two sessions will be held on  Thursday, July 20 and Tuesday, July 25 from  10 am to 11:30 am in the "Upper Room."

If you would like to join Holly Clark, our summer seminarian who is leading the Bible Appreciation series, for Morning Prayer before these sessions, please join her by the altar by  9:15 am on  July 20 and 25. No prior experience with Morning Prayer is necessary. All are welcome to join this brief prayer service, which includes a reading of the daily lectionary and some time of reflective silence.

Also, if you are participating in the Bible Appreciation and still need a copy of the black journal that accompanies the materials we are using, you can pick one up from Holly's desk the next time you are at the church.
Save the date!  All are welcome!

A great thing about having a summer birthday is that friends give me books to read, confident that I'll have some free time and then we can talk about what we've each been reading.  I like the whole concept!

My twin brother, Tom gave me Alan Alda's new book, "If I understood you, would I have this look on my face?" Alda, the actor, calls it his adventures in communicating. My brother's been bugging me to tell him how I like the book, so I've been digging into it.

I like it a lot.  It speaks to the hope we have that we will truly listen to and know and even love each other, particularly those whom we don't understand or appreciate.

Alda tells us a story about the famous director Mike Nichols directing him and Barbara Harris in The Apple Tree on Broadway. Nichols complains that they are relating as though relating is "icing on the cake." 'It's not." Nichols says, "Relating is the cake."

It takes Alda years to understand this relating business. For him, it's like this: "It's being so aware of the other person that, even if you have your back to them, you're observing them...their tone...their posture...how they occupy a chair...being with them. Relating is letting all that seep in, so you can respond in truth.

Relating he says permits listening.  And listening, he says, permits him to be changed.

Awareness to relating to listening to change.  Hmmm...I thought this was going to be light summer reading!

So what if in my ordinary summer day, I tuned up my awareness muscles, let other's presence seep in, so I could truly listen? So I could be changed.  That'd be a good thing for priest.

But it'd be an amazing thing for my ordinary guy life, too. What if, borne of our awareness and relating, we listened in such a genuine way that we changed each other?  Alda learned this all on stage, that intense laboratory of relating and changing and coming alive.  He reminds us that none of us is on our stages alone, opportunities for awareness, relating, listening and change abound.

What are you reading?

See you Sunday!

All are welcome!

Making A Difference
Please Help! The need is great!
Imagine if you just got home from the hospital or are having some other issues.
You are healing your body and spirit and maybe you are unable to cook.
Then someone shows up to your home with a homemade meal...
You can help your fellow parishioners by volunteering to cook a meal (or more).
If you would like to help (even one meal) please
contact our coordinator Linda at   [email protected]
 Helping Local Homeless Families

Thank you to those who have already brought in donations of twin sheet sets (8 1/2" deep pockets) and twin blankets / comforters. As of
Thursday, we have collected 10 of the 20 sheet sets and 4 of the 20 blankets.

Many of you have expressed interest in volunteering for one of the shifts of care on August 13, 14, and 15 when the families will be spending the evening and overnight and eating breakfast at Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church. Please sign up when you are at church on Sunday on the forms in Bonoff Hall.

What is Family Promise?
Family Promise is a national ecumenical organization that provides temporary shelter, meals, and support services to local families who are experiencing temporary homelessness.

The goal is to support families through this difficulty time so that they can regain independence as soon as possible. The families that participate in this program have a very high success rate of meeting this goal within several weeks.

When? St. Alban's is collaborating with other local churches on Family Promise from Sunday, August 13 - 15. We will serve three other weeks in the next program year.

Who? The Cape Elizabeth United Methodist Church (CEUMC) is the physical site where the families will be hosted. Cape Elizabeth United Methodist and St. Bartholomew's Roman Catholic Church, Cape Elizabeth are our partners for this ecumenical, community project.

How can you help now?
1) Donate twin blankets/comforters and twin 8 1/2 inch deep pocket twin sheets sets. Our goal is 20 blankets or comforters and 20 twin sheet sets. Please put them in the bins in Bonoff Hall.

2) Sign up to help host the families at CEUMC. There are a variety of ways to help to support the success of
these families. See the sign up sheets in Bonoff Hall.

See Holly Clark (our summer seminarian), Debbie Phelan, Margot Brill, or Ginny Secco with questions.
