Dear Saint Rose Families,

Parent involvement is one of the hallmark characteristics of Saint Rose Catholic School.  Our school would not exist without the generous donation of our parents' time.  Parents volunteer in the classrooms and as room parents, party planners, graduation coordinators, THOL volunteers, classroom readers and more.  Outside of school parents buy cookies for events, donate to Sponsor a Student and Moonlight and Roses, coach CYO teams, assist Pirates Parents Club events, and more.  I remember my wife and I cutting out endless shapes for the preschool parents nights. Those shapes made their way into pieces of art that came home throughout the year.  I am appreciative of all of the time our parents donate to our school and its students.  Next week is a planning meeting for Pirates Parents Club.  I hope that you are able to attend or have a chance to send in your ideas.

This has been a great week for getting in classes.  I had a chance to spend some time in each kindergarten through eighth grade classroom.  We are definitely past the first few back to school days.  Teachers and students are working hard.  I hope that your child is off to a good start.

Sincerely,
Bryon Borgelt

Car and Bus Line

Today we experimented with letting the cars go first and then the Perrysburg buses. Perrysburg buses have been arriving late due to Perrysburg dismissal times.  This has caused our parking lot to back up on to Front Street and confusion as cars and buses mix in the pick up lane.

Rossford and Eastwood buses load right at  3:30 along with the first set of cars.  Perrysburg bus students are then called down at  3:45 to load on Perrysburg buses.
Things went well today. We will try this again  tomorrow. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding.

PLEASE NOTE:
MENU LUNCH ON SEPTEMBER 18,  GRANDPARENT'S DAY,
IS FOR STUDENTS ONLY.

Grandparents will not stay or arrive for lunch with students this year.
Thank you

The Saint Rose School Advisory Council (SAC) is composed of nine parents who have students currently enrolled in Saint Rose School. Our students range in age from preschool through eighth grade. Some of us have been a part of the school for many years, while others are relatively new to the Saint Rose School family. SAC meets on a regular basis with the pastor and principal to consult and advise on school matters such as long-range planning, public relations, and policy development. Dr. Borgelt and Fr. George bring school plans and issues to discuss, while us members give our feedback and also bring our own ideas and concerns to share.

SAC discussions are very open, friendly, and productive, with the interests of the students and faculty being our top priority. Recent topics of discussions have included building security, class enrollment, enhancing space and facilities for teachers, creating opportunities for families to share uniforms, school lunch catering, student retention, alternate dress days, tuition payment plans, bullying and related social concerns, honors classes, diocesan policies, offering religious enrichment activities to students, and many others.

Some of the other areas where SAC has assisted include providing input into the School Strategic Plan, evaluating execution of the Plan by creating and analyzing the results of the annual parent survey, and welcoming new families to the school community. We also engage in outreach efforts with departing families to determine what Saint Rose School can learn from their experiences. You will see our members in the school community; for example, at the annual open house and the Moonlight & Roses fundraiser. We also serve as a connection point for other school community members who have questions, concerns, issues, or suggestions that they would like to bring forth to the administration. Please feel free to contact any one of us if you would like to provide feedback on any aspect of the school.

If you have an interest in serving on the SAC in the future, applications for election are sent in the weekly newsletter every Spring.

Thank You!

Hello Saint Rose Families!

I would like to personally thank each of our blessed Saint Rose families for your generous book donations toward my Gold Award Project at The Nest in Bowling Green. Your donations are appreciated by so many, and together we are giving other families the opportunity to bond and form a loving relationship with their child through a love of reading.
"You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh ; rather, serve one another humbly in love." (Galatians 5:13).  We are called to serve one another, and together we are serving others through our continued prayers and book donations.  Thank you again for your generosity!

Blessings,
Gabriella Ravas

A Few Reminders from the School Handbook:

BIRTHDAY TREATS

Birthday treats/healthy snacks/holiday party treats may be brought to school.  If the treat is for a child's birthday, parents must notify the teacher prior to the day the treat is brought in.  Parents should contact the classroom teacher 24 hours prior to bringing the treat to class.  A student may need to celebrate his/her birthday on another day due to a special event.

To better ensure the safety of all of our students, any food item that is to be distributed during school must be commercially produced and labeled  with a list of ingredients (no homemade treats are permitted).  The food item will be distributed at the discretion of the child's teacher.

A list of allergens will be shared by the teacher.

Although we try to provide the safest environment for all of our students, Saint Rose cannot guarantee the food safety of any food item that is brought to school for distribution.  Families of students that have allergies are encouraged to send in some special treats to be kept by the teachers for any special dietary needs their children have. These treats must be shelf stable. The teacher will keep the snacks for one year to distributed when food treats are brought in.

Please note, that instead of a food item, families may send in other items.  Some ideas include:
  • A favorite book to be donated to the class
  • Stickers
  • A small craft for the class to make
  • School supplies

Please reach out to your child's teacher for any other ideas.

POLICY FOR USE OF CELL PHONES, MP3 PLAYERS (IPODS),
HAND-HELD GAMES, ETC.

Saint Rose School understands that technology changes constantly and that many students own some of the current technological conveniences in life such as cell phones, smart watches, MP3 Players (IPods), hand-held games and personal electronics.  The faculty and staff of Saint Rose believe that school is not a place where these types of items are needed however, we respect a parent's decision to allow their child to have a cell phone, smart watch, iPod, hand-held game or personal electronic device. .

Should a student need to use a telephone while at school, they are welcome to use the phone in the school office.  If a student is working with a teacher after school, the teachers' rooms have telephones.  Being a Catholic school, we are extremely concerned about the improper use of cell phones.  Many phones are also cameras, and inappropriate pictures, or pictures, which lead to bullying activity, are a main concern.

Music on personal devices should be appropriate for all ages if it is to be played at Saint Rose.  Please keep handheld gaming devices at home to prevent damage or loss.

The  use of cell phones, MP3 players (IPods), smart watches, hand-held games, and personal electronics is not allowed anywhere on the Saint Rose School campus, unless a student has specific permission from a teacher, administrator, or supervisor.  If one of these items is brought to school, it must be turned off and kept in the student's book bag.  The student will take full responsibility for any of these items, which they bring to school.  Saint Rose School accepts no responsibility for items lost or taken from lockers or book bags.

Thank you!

Counselor's Corner                         Aug. 2018

Welcome back! It is hard to believe that the start of the school year is here already. I hope everyone got to take some time to relax and rejuvenate over the summer vacation. School counseling services can be a great resource for both parents and students to help students get off to the right start this year. Saint Rose counseling services will be available Monday afternoons, Tuesdays, Wednesday afternoons, and Thursdays. The services will include individual counseling, group counseling, such as organizational sessions, classroom observations, parent consultations, teacher consultations, and guidance lessons taught in all K-8 classrooms each month.

Additionally, please review the handbook under the message from school counselor section to review information regarding the ways we support students' emotional health as well.

New families:
I wanted to welcome the new students and families here to St. Rose School. As a way to promote a smooth transition to a new school, I will be periodically checking on your child in these first couple weeks of school. Additionally, I will be contacting parents /guardians during this time to discuss how everything is going at school as well.

Positive Behavior/Anti-Bullying Programming:
Pilot Program- 5th grade
Regarding grade 5 guidance lessons, we will be piloting the curriculum, Be Kind First Project, which many of the surrounding Catholic schools have started to utilize as well. We may then expand the program for next year We are excited to incorporate some new ideas for positive behavior at Saint Rose School.

Additionally, we will also have an interactive assembly for K-5 students called the Ned Show in September 21st that will incorporate the themes of positive behavior with a fun tie in with yoyos! We will need a parent volunteer every day the week afterwards to sell students yoyos during the K-5th grade recess time from 12:10-1:10. Please email Mrs. Swavel if you are interested in helping out.

Starting in September, every month we will continue with our Lifeskill Student of the Month. One K-8 student per classroom, who demonstrates the qualities and behaviors of a specific Lifeskill will be nominated. Those winners will receive a certificate and earn an alternate dress day. We love to see the pride and excitement of the students when they get recognized for such positive choices.

I am very excited for the new programming and I hope these things ultimately allow your children to have a wonderful school year of academic and social/emotional growth.

Guidance Lesson Recap:
This month's lesson served as an introduction to the school counselor and provided discussion for how the counseling services can be helpful and available to the students here at Saint Rose School.

Grade K/1: We read the book The Wheels on the Bus by Mary-Alice Moore and focused on the many people at school who can help Kindergarten students if they have a problem. From lunchroom workers to the school counselor, students learned when would be a good time to ask for help. They also identified many people at school who will be able to provide assistance when needed.

Grade 2: We read the story Tractor Mac School Day by Bill Steers. The story discussed how the first day of driving to school did not go as planned and how he wanted to give up. With support and encouragement from others, he realized that he had to work through his worries with the help of others. As a class, we talked about the many people who could help with difficult situations, such as the school counselor.

Grades 3/4: As a class, we discussed many ways the counselor can help students here at school. We emphasized the importance of positivity and affirmations and how counselors can help students be positive in school even when things get difficult. Students then got to make fortune teller crafts with various affirmations in them.

Grades 5: We completed an activity where we focused on how counselors can help in times of stress. Students brainstormed many examples that can create stress for students. Students then participated in an activity in books to depict all of the stress that can weigh on us and how important it is to ask for help from others when our pile gets too heavy.

Grades 6-8: - As a class, we discussed the role that a school counselor plays and how they can help students be successful here at school. Students then completed an activity called Don't Eat the Starburst, which emphasized the importance of self-control, delayed gratification, and self-regulation. Students discussed times during the school year where these skills are important to be successful in many aspects of their lives, such as friendships, academics, and at home.
