Dear Saint Rose Families,

Just over two weeks ago we were once again forced to acknowledge the evil and violence that exist in our society as another school, Stoneman Douglas in Florida, was the scene of a school shooting.  Our prayers go out to all of the victims and families affected by this senseless tragedy.
The safety of our students in our number one concern at Saint Rose Catholic School.  The security of our campus has been an ongoing discussion.  Over the past few months the school and parish administration began to look at what we can do to provide greater security on our campus.  At this time we are researching and planning for a new visitor entrance to our school. The entrance will force all visitors to enter through the school's office during the school day.  This will help to screen all visitors and prevent anyone from openly accessing the school.  The expense for this project will be covered with this year's Moonlight and Roses event in April.  I ask you to please consider attending this event and supporting these improvements.
We are also studying our current electronic lock system for our doors to determine if any upgrades can be made.  We are doing the same with our security camera system.
There are several improvements that can me be made right away.  All parents, grandparents, and visitors will be required to sign in to the office and wear a visitor guest badge.  This has always been our policy, but I am asking teachers and students to stop anyone in the halls without a pass and contact the office.  No visitors are to be in the school at any point without first signing in and getting a pass from the office. Parents wishing to pick up their children at the end of the day need to please wait outside the school in the bus/car line area.
I also reminded students to not open the door for anyone.  I will ask the same of our parents and other visitors. Please do not hold the door for anyone.  They need to please call into the office where the will be buzzed in and viewed on our monitor.
We will continue to look for the best ways to improve our security.  We have an additional lock down/evacuation planned with Perrysburg Police. It will allow our teachers, students and first responders to practice their ALICE training.  I asked our faculty to think of and share their ideas about school safety. I ask the same of you. Please share any concerns or ideas that you have with me at [email protected]

Sincerely,

Bryon Borgelt

Counselor's Corner                                  Feb. 2018

This month's lesson will focus on the Lifeskill of Organization and important this skill in being successful in school. We discussed how organization could help us in many aspects of our life, such as finding homework assignments and supplies. We also gave students time to clean and organize their supplies so they are ready to start fresh during the new quarter.

Guidance Lesson Recap:

Grades K/1: We read the book Pigsty by Mark Teague. The story was about a boy who had a hard time cleaning his room. After some procrastination, he finally learned the value of staying on top of his organization and how it was easier if he would clean periodically. After brainstorming some ways to stay organized at school, the students were given time to clean and organize their desks to get ready for the new quarter.

Grades 2/3-We read the book The Schmutzy Family by Madelyn Rosenberg. The story was about a family who liked to have fun and get messy at times. At the end, the family also showed that they know when it is important to get neat and tidy as well. Students brainstormed positive ways to get organized at school. The students were then given time to organize their desks.

Grades 5: We read the book Sloppy Joe by Dave Keane. The story focused on a boy who had a hard time getting organized. We reviewed some strategies on getting organized here at school, such as using color coding systems, putting homework in the correct area, and using the assignment notebook. Students then were given time to organize their lockers.

Grades 6-8: We reviewed strategies on getting organized, such as writing down assignments in the I-Pad, packing their book bag the night before, and scheduling periodic clean-outs of the locker so students can find supplies when needed. Students were given time to organize their I-Pads, folders, and clear out their lockers.
