Athlete Spotlight: Dianna Shank

Diana ShankDianna Shank steps onto the streets below her downtown St. Louis loft, where she lives with her husband, Jim, and their dog, Stella. Stella is a faithful running partner, and the two push the pavement behind them with steady strides. Yes, the miles are slower than they were last year at this time. Yes, the miles are harder, maybe even a bit unfamiliar. But they are there. And it feels good to run.

Almost a year ago to the day, Dianna was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Dianna began running nine years ago as part of a weight loss program. She signed up for a three-day breast cancer awareness walk in honor of a friend at work who had been recently diagnosed with the condition and began walking and running in preparation for the event. Soon, she had lost seventy pounds and found herself in love with distance running. She took full advantage of the area's abundant 5K and 10K scene, racing as often as possible. In 2002, she made the leap to the half marathon distance at Lewis and Clark in St. Charles, returning the next year-as she would every year after that-to run the full. It would be her first of seventeen marathons, including marathons in Cincinnati (Flying Pig), San Francisco, Rotterdam (Amsterdam), and Seattle.

Last April, Dianna set her sights on the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco. This time around, however, training would test the limits of both her endurance and determination in a way the other races hadn't. Just weeks after signing up for the marathon, Dianna was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Dianna's treatment began with a series of surgeries throughout the summer. Running, for the time being, was out of the question. Determined to train in some way, Dianna took to the stationary bike for brief snippets of exercise. In August, she began the first of eighteen weeks of chemotherapy. The treatment was difficult, but her body had healed enough from the surgeries that she could run again. Though Dianna usually ran forty miles a week when training for a marathon, she had to adjust her miles for her body's response to the treatment. She was lucky to log ten miles in a week. "I was drained physically in a way I've never been drained before," she says.

October arrived, bringing with it both the Nike Women's Marathon and the first of three months of radiation. Still receiving chemotherapy and suffering the effects of heavy and constant medication, Dianna determined not to let cancer keep her from running. As a precaution, she and her husband decided that if her body didn't feel right during the first part of the race, she would pull out at the half. But after thirteen miles of hilly San Francisco terrain, Dianna was still feeling strong. She would keep going.

"The last couple of miles were pretty hard. [They are] against the ocean, so it was absolutely, stunningly beautiful. I knew I could finish. I didn't know how long it was going to take," she laughs. "I just knew that I could finish." And finish she did. Having run no more than ten miles in a week, having run not a single long run during her training ("I maybe pulled out a ten-mile run downstairs on the treadmill once"), in the midst of chemotherapy and radiation treatment, Dianna completed the difficult course in five hours, thirty minutes.

While Dianna readily admits hers was not an ideal training plan, she credits her accomplishments to her experience in her previous sixteen marathons and to the overall fitness created by a sustained running program. "We caught the cancer early," she explains, "and being physically fit is a huge advantage for your body."

Dianna is now cancer free and focused on getting her body back to her previous, four-hour marathon shape, building up her mileage again and even dipping her feet into the world of triathlon. "I'm always training for something. I always try to race at least every few weeks-before cancer, after cancer. I always like having goals." She pauses. "I'm just a stubborn runner who doesn't want to stop running."
