Not enough sales last week for good market comparisons. When comparing to two weeks ago, steer calves under 650 lbs sold steady to 3.00 higher, steers over 650 lbs sold steady to 4.00 lower. Feeder heifers mostly steady to 2.00 lower, although mid to heavy weight replacement-quality heifers sold with a higher undertone. Many early week sales were once again impacted by winter weather; making transportation of cattle difficult, if not impossible. The promise of warmer weather and green grass has some buyers starting to think hard about buying grass cattle, especially in Southern regions of the state. Although spring seems far away after the many sub-freezing days this winter season, buyers are wary that tight supplies of feeders will dry up if they wait too long to fill grazing needs. Heifers suitable for replacements are seeing very good demand as producers are rebuilding herds. On Wednesday in Green City a string of forty head of heifers weighing 714 lbs topped out at 209.00 on the hundred-weight, bringing 1492.00 per head. Feedlot trade lightly tested so far this week, very light trade in KS on Thursday was 2.00-3.00 lower at 142.00. Some packers are observing Monday’s holiday and keeping plants dark, reducing the number they need to purchase by today’s close of business. Cutout values continue their fall, Thursdays Choice closed at 208.10. The Choice/Select spread has narrowed to only 34 cents.
