Parish Summit
We pray for...
  • those affected by the earthquakes,
    hurricanes, flooding and fires wreaking havoc across the world;
  • civil discourse grounded in respect;
  • refugees, immigrants and those without a home.
  • The search for a new bishop and rector: Merciful God giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a bishop for this Diocese and a rector for this parish, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Movie Lovers Gathering tomorrow!
movie-collage.jpg
Movie Lovers Group will see The Shape of Water at Shea Harkins Theater this Friday, February 2 at 1:40 p.m. Come join us!  A synopsis follows:

THE SHAPE OF WATER - an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa is trapped in a life of silence and isolation. Elisa's life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda discover a secret classified experiment.
Habitat - THIS SATURDAY!
We're looking for hammer swingers and other DIY volunteers to help Abdullahi Shire and Sudi Warsame build their new home. St. Stephen's  is assisting the Episcopal Habitat Coalition of Central Arizona  in its spring project.  Our coalition is  working with several other non-profit organizations to build a new house for Abdullahi and Sudi to buy for themselves and their three children. We will meet at 7:15 AM on Saturday, 3 February to frame the Shire's House.  We should be done by just after lunch. It is always a well-spent morning to help people put sweat equity into a house that they will buy from Habitat.

The house we are building is at 1937 E Don Carlos in Tempe, near McClintock and Apache Click here for a map.  If you want to help us keep the house on track for its June dedication, please contact Vic Grace at 602.463.8044. We can get you a ride if you need one.
Mexican Train next Friday!
Mexican Train will be played on Friday, February 9th in the dining room at 6:30 p.m.  Plan to join us!  Bring a snack or just come and join in on all the fun.
S.A.G.E.S. - Feb. 15th
S.A.G.E.S. will meet on Thursday, February 15th at noon in the dining room.  If you haven't joined this fun group, come give us a try.  We are a group of men and women, 60's more or less who enjoy a good meal, fellowship and conversation.  Bring a salad, bread, casserole or dessert to feed 5 or 6.  Hope to see you on the 15th!
Update from Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee met again on Saturday, January 27th and finalized details for the Appreciative Inquiry Summit coming up on February 17th.  The takeaway from this meeting was that we would like to encourage everyone to attend the Summit - it's very important that you let your voice be heard and that we hear your  stories.  The Summit is the first step in creating our Parish Profile that will be used in the search process.  The Nominating Committee will meet again on Saturday, February 24th.
Parish Work Day - March 10
construction_hard_hat.jpg
Mark your calendars and plan to pitch in for our parish workday on March 10th. We'll have a task list available for sign up in the coming weeks.
Be sure to check all the doors at church!
Just a friendly reminder to double check that all the doors are locked when among the last to leave the church property. We've found doors unlocked at church over the last few weeks.
2018 Altar Flower Sign-Ups
asst-flowers.jpg
We have hung up a new sign-up sheet for 2018 altar flowers on the west wall just as you walk into the sanctuary. Be sure to sign up in the sanctuary or online by clicking here  if you'd like to donate flowers in celebration or memory of any loved one or special occasion.
Lenten Study Series

Mark your calendars and plan to join us for the Lenten Soup & Study series on Wednesday nights during Lent from 5:45-7:30pm, beginning February 21st. We'll be studying and discussing videos from a series titled - A Celebration of Disciple: The Path to Spiritual Growth by Richard J. Foster.
Adult Education on Sunday Morning
We will begin Adult Formation again on Sunday, February 4th @ 11:00am. We will be using a video series on the lives of the Apostles, following the Resurrection of our Lord. Who were they? What did they do? Where did they go? What were their lives like as they spread the Gospel of Christ throughout the world? Come and join us as we learn some of the answers to how our faith spread so far and grew for so long.
Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday and the Season of Lent is coming closer with each day. Set aside the day of February 14 (you have permission to move St. Valentine's Day to February 13 this year) as a day of fasting of devotion. Join us for Imposition of Ashes and Holy Communion at either Noon or 6:30 p.m. We will be emphasizing simplicity in our Sunday services for Lent this year, so be ready for some changes.
Volunteers needed!
Help St. Stephen's find new tenants for our facility.  Please join the Facility Mission Working Group (a/k/a Tenant Search Committee) headed by vestry members Kristin McCartor and Ken Carleno.  Our goal is to find a new tenant to rent our facility in a win-win solution for an area non-profit that needs space and fits with St. Stephen's mission.  You can call Kristin McCartor (602-421-6954/leave a message if she doesn't answer) or the church office for information or to help in the search.
Wanted: Lenten Soup Cooks
grilled_cheese_soup.jpg
We're in need of soup cooks for Lenten series beginning on Wednesday Feb. 21st.  There will be a sign up board outside the sanctuary after services.  We've got great cooks in our community so this is your opportunity to share your God given talents.  Call April Priddy if you have any questions, 602-957-2434.  Thank you!!
Let your voice be heard - Appreciate Inquiry Summit
Saturday, February 17th, 9am to 3pm, in Fredrickson Hall
Lunch and child care will be provided

The Nominating Committee and Vestry are pleased to announce the upcoming Appreciative Inquiry Summit, which is the next step in our rector search.  Please come and tell us about your experiences at St. Stephen's.  We want to hear your stories - they are the beginning of our search for a rector.

The Rev Canon Megan Traquair and our search consultant, Dr Janet Beason, will be joining us as we take time as a community to come together and look at where we have been, where we are now, and where we want to be.

We aspire to be an accepting community in which people will know Jesus Christ through worship, prayer, spiritual formation and fellowship. We hope our community will encourage all to use their God given gifts to serve others in the name of Christ.

Faithfully,

St. Stephen's Episcopal Church
