FEATURED SCHOOL: Miller Education Center
MEC's Bumper Crop
Miller Education Center's middle and high school campus (formerly David Hill Elementary School) is home to Hillsboro's fourth community garden. For hosting the garden, MEC was given two of the plots: one 40'x40' and one 20'x40'. This has been a great opportunity for the horticulture class to do some hands-on learning. So far this fall, students have studied soil composition and the seed germination process, maintained the plots, harvested crops, and even created a compost pile to which all gardeners can add clippings, weeds, overripe produce, and the like. If you haven't had a chance to visit the David Hill Community Garden at MEC, consider joining one of the Fall Garden Work Parties there on Friday, October 24, or Saturday, October 25, both days from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information about Hillsboro's community gardens, visit Hillsboro Parks and Recreation's website.

REMINDER: PLEASE SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH US BY WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15!
On Monday, October 6, each of you should havereceived an invitation e-mail to participate in a feedback process moderated by a company we have partnered with named Thoughtexchange. Getting input from as many people as possible is very important to us as we work to both continually improve and plan for the future of our schools and district. Please take a few moments to answer the questions of what's working well, what could be improved, and what other thoughts or ideas you may have.

Some people have asked about the anonymity of responses. Please know that all responses are collected and moderated by Thoughtexchange staff, not District staff. While Thoughtexchange could match responses with e-mail addresses, that is not part of their process and we do not wish to have that information. So to us, all the responses are confidential.

If you have any other questions, please contact Communications Directo
r Beth Graser. If you did not receive the invitation e-mail or simply wish to go directly to the process, please click here to get to the self-register webpage. Thank you!
2013-14 STATE REPORT CARDS

The Oregon Department of Education released 2013-14 report cards for all public schools and districts in the state last Thursday, October 9. The report cards provide detailed information on a variety of indicators, including demographics, standardized testing, and college and career preparedness. Some highlights for Hillsboro are that our rates for graduation and freshmen on track to graduate within four years far outpace both the state and like-district averages. In addition, 88% of our schools are designated at a Level 3 or 4 (out of 5). Click here to read more. Click here to download the state report cards for the district and each school.

Coffee Chats and workforce development forum provide opportunities to hear from Superintendent Scott

There are three opportunities this week to hear from Superintendent Mike Scott about what's going on in Hillsboro Schools: two Coffee Chats and the Hillsboro Chamber's Business Forum Lunch. The Coffee Chats are taking place on Tuesday, October 14, from 8-9 a.m. at Baseline Insomnia, and on Thursday, October 16, from 8-9 a.m. at Longbottom Coffee and Tea.

The Business Forum Lunch is taking place on Tuesday, October 14, from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Walters Cultural Arts Center. The cost is $20 for members and $30 for non-members; at-the-door registration is $5 additional for members. The topic of the lunch is "Building partnerships to promote a vibrant, diverse workforce." Joining Mr. Scott for the panel discussion will be Dr. Lesley Hallick, Pacific University President, and Dr. Jeremy Brown, PCC President. Join them as they explore key partnerships that will ensure the next generation workforce is prepared for life after high school.

GREAT OREGON SHAKEOUT IS OCTOBER 16
No, we're not talking milkshakes, we're talking earthquakes!

On Thursday, October 16, at 10:16 a.m., schools, businesses, neighborhood organizations, hospitals and more will be practicing how to be safer during big earthquakes. Did you know that there are over 1,000 earthquakes over magnitude 1.0 in Washington and Oregon every year, with at least two dozen being large enough to be felt? Oregon lies in the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which is a 600-mile long earthquake fault stretching from offshore northern California to southern British Columbia, and history has shown we are susceptible to both subduction zone and crustal earthquakes. Preparedness is key! To learn more, sign up, or see who has already signed up, visit The Great Oregon ShakeOut website.

OREGON ASSOCIATION FOR TALENTED AND GIFTED CONFERENCE OCTOBER 18

Don't miss this once a year opportunity to connect with talented and gifted educators, parents, and advocates from around the state at OATAG's 2014 Conference on Saturday, October 18, at Pacific University. As a complement to regular conference sessions, OATAG is offering two programs geared toward gifted children: Kitchen Chemistry and Amusement Park Physics through a new partnership with Saturday Academy. Additionally, OATAG is offering a Paths to Scholarship program designed for teens. Additional details about the day's program and registration may be found on OATAG's website.

OREGON HIGH SCHOOL ETHICS BOWL

First annual competition will take place at Portland State University on January 30, 2015

Registration is now open for the First Annual Oregon High School Ethics Bowl, taking place on Friday, January 30, 2015, at Portland State University. Teams of high school students from across the state will gather for the event and "compete" with their peers.

According to the website: "The Ethics Bowl promotes ethical awareness and the skills needed for a thoughtful, democratic citizenry...Though it is a competition, the goal is not to defeat the other team, but to give the strongest possible analysis of complex ethical issues." In preparation for the event, teams are welcome to attend workshops put on by PSU Philosophy faculty who specialize in ethics, experienced Ethics Bowl coaches, and senior Philosophy majors. Workshops are October 15 and 30, November 12 and 26, and December 11. Click here for more information.
