God's call to us

In our Hebrew Bible reading Sunday and in our Gospel we learn about God's call, the invitation to seek and do God's will. At the beginning of a calendar year this is a helpful reminder to each of us that God reaches out to us in many ways: in thoughts, in dreams and reflection, in the discussion of fa

ith with others, in church. All kinds of ways, all kinds of places.

Samuel thought Eli was calling to him and went to Eli, only to find out it was not Eli who called. After this happened three times, "Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy." The idea that someone else might recognize God's call for a person rather than the person themselves is a stunning notion. It was for Samuel, to be sure, for he "...did not yet know the Lord."

Philip and Nathanael  are called by Jesus in the Gospel reading. Philip is not surprised, for Jesus had already called his friends, the brothers Andrew and Peter. Nathanael however is stunned that Jesus knew him, that he cared about him, even. Especially after Nathanael's caustic, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?"

We know the answer to that question. We live it out in our lives together in faith. Good comes out of Nazareth to this day. And everywhere else, as well.
