Greetings, NYASLA Members & Friends!
Over 500 people attended NYASLA's events during Landscape Architecture Month. Activities got underway with a splash on April 3rd with the presentation of the 2012 Chapter Design Awards, honoring outstanding projects from member firms. The roster of thirteen exciting events celebrated the historical and contemporary contributions that landscape architects have made in designing livable, sustainable public and private spaces. Activities ranged from Central Park tours to book talks to the fourth symposium in the popular High-Performance Landscapes series. A total of 8.5 LA CES CEUs were offered for the educational programs.

NYASLA PROUDLY ANNOUNCES THE
2012 DESIGN AWARDS
|
The 2012 NYASLA Design Awards were presented in a well-attended ceremony at The Hort that also marked the opening of the exhibition featuring the projects. Ten Honor Awards and thirteen Merit Awards were presented to sixteen firms, with three firms receiving multiple awards. Projects included public parks, urban plazas, complete streets, community gardens and residential properties. The firms competed in five categories: Landscape Architecture Design; Small Landscape Project Under $50,000; Collaborative Design (for projects involving landscape architects and allied professionals); Planning, Analysis, Research and Communications; and Un-Built Projects. The competition was juried by the Illinois chapter, and the exhibition curated by The Hort's Chris Murtha. James Russell, Bloomberg architecture critic, presented commentary and certificates.
Guests included New York City Parks & Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe, NYASLA President Denisha Williams, Hort Executive Director Sara Hobel, the principals of several member firms, and members of the Awards Committee. The event was co-sponsored by The Hort, The New York Office of William J. Quinlan, and Andrews LeFevre Studios.

'A PRIVATE OASIS'
A BOOK TALK WITH EDMUND HOLLANDER

Whether a home is a great place to live often depends on what lies beyond its walls. The landscape-when it has a well-thought-out shape and character-gives a home much of its character and satisfaction. In The Private Oasis, two of New York's leading landscape architects, Edmund Hollander and Maryanne Connelly, guide readers through a series of remarkable landscapes and gardens, explaining how to apply their techniques, no matter what the size of the reader's property.
Edmund Hollander is President of Edmund Hollander Design, a firm with offices in New York and Sag Harbor which includes environmental planners, landscape architects and horticulturists. He has taught at the City College of the University of New York and in the Graduate School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania and has lectured at the New York Botanical Garden. He is the Past President of the New York Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects and was recently elected a Fellow in the American Society of Landscape Architects.

OUT IN THE OPEN: LED LUMINAIRES FOR LANDSCAPE APPLICATIONS

A kick-off lecture by Linnaea Tillett, PhD on "Atmospheres" introduces an installation of LED luminaires for landscape applications at the iGuzzini lighting USA showroom. Ms. Tillett founded Linnaea Tillett Lighting Design Inc. in 1983 and holds a doctorate in environmental psychology. She is known for designs that are sensitive to the perceptual, behavioral and psychological effects of light.

Announcing the Gowanus Canal Conservancy (GCC) Urban Ecology Lecture Series: on Wednesday evening, May 23, the Conservancy will host ecology professor Dr. Timon McPherson of the New School to discuss "Fostering Resilience in the NYC Social-Ecological System." This event is the first in a new series of lectures on ecological issues relevant to New York City and the Gowanus Canal Watershed. All events will take place in the mezzanine at 61 Local from 6:30pm-7:30pm (music and networking) and from 7:30-8:30pm (lecture). Space is limited to 75 people so come early. ACE MENTOR PROGRAM
2012 FINAL PRESENTATIONS

The ACE Mentor Program, a not-for-profit organization, helps prepare high school students for careers in design and construction. The fastest-growing mentoring program in the building industry, ACE operates in over 40 states and 200 cities across the nation. In previous years, teams worked on design projects as diverse as a recreational sports complex, a library extension, a theater ticket outlet and an emergency evacuation center. One project-- a sustainably designed arts center -- won honorable mention in the citywide Emerging Green Builders NYC design competition.
At the end of the year, special events are held for students and families, as well as mentors, sponsors and the faculty of several area universities. During these events, teams presented their projects using AutoCAD drawings, floor plans, sketches and construction schedules. To conclude the year's program, scholarships are given out to outstanding seniors who intend to pursue careers in the design and construction industry.

NSCW is inaugurating the first Design with Nature Prize at this year's conference. As the place where sustainability meets community revitalization, the organizers of NSCW see this prize as an opportunity to recognize those pioneers who believe that we can live sustainably on the earth in harmony with nature.

2012 WAYNE GRACE COMPETITION

This competition, open to any student or team of students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Landscape Architectural Degree Program, recognizes outstanding student examples of landscape architectural work that clearly demonstrate (in words and images that can be easily understood by the public, regulators, landscape architects and other design professionals) how the practice of landscape architecture and licensing affects quality of life.
CLARB's not-for-profit charitable foundation, the Landscape Architectural Registration Boards Foundation (LARBF), created this annual competition in honor of Wayne Grace, a licensed professional who was dedicated to improving the quality of life in his hometown of Macon, Georgia through the practice of landscape architecture and worked to advance the cause of licensure throughout the United States.
One Grand Prize Winner will receive $1,000 cash + $1,000 credit towards taking LARE or purchasing / renewing CLARB Council Record!
Cost: $25 to enter; school projects are encouraged.

LAND ART GENERATOR INITIATIVE
DESIGN COMPETITION

In partnership with the NYCDPR, the 2012 Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) design competition is being held for a site within Freshkills Park. The ideas competition, which is free and open to everyone, is to design a site-specific public artwork that, in addition to its conceptual beauty, has the ability to harness energy cleanly from nature and convert it to electricity for the utility grid. Designers, artists, engineers, architects, landscape architects, university students, urban planners, scientists and anyone who believes that the world can be powered beautifully and sustainably are encouraged to enter.

A jury will select the winning entry based on the judging criteria explained in the brief. The winner will be announced at an award ceremony in October, followed by a public exhibit of qualified entries. The monetary prize award ($15,000 First Prize, $4,000 Second Prize, $1,000 High School Edition Winner) will not guarantee a commission for construction; however, LAGI will work with stakeholders both locally (NYC) and internationally to pursue possibilities for implementation of the most pragmatic and aesthetic LAGI designs.
