Sign Up for Parent-Teacher Conferencestodo

Tomorrow night by midnight is the last chance for you to sign up for parent-teacher conferences. They will be held on Monday, September 21. This is your opportunity to meet with all of your child(ren)'s teachers and discuss their progress. Please be sure to sign up for a conference with ALL of your child's teachers. Each conference is 10 minutes and if you have multiple students with the same teacher (such as Arabic, IS, etc.), you may only sign up for one slot for all of the children. If no slots are available for one of your child's teachers, please contact her to set up another conference time. Sign ups are first come, first serve. Ask your child which Arabic teacher s/he has as there are multiple levels from 4th-8th grade (or email us to ask). There are no conferences with auxiliary teachers (such as PE, art, etc.) but you can set them on separate days if you wish. Find a list of your child's teachers here. Contact teachers directly via email here. Students may not attend the conferences.

Eid ul-Adha Break

Students are off from school this whole week to celebrate Eid with their families. We look forward to seeing the students back on Monday, September 28.

Eid ul-Adha prayers will be taking place at masajid across the city. Please refer to this list of ISGH location Eid prayers or refer to other masajid websites to find an Eid prayer near you.

Volunteer Trainings

All parents who wish to chaperone at field trips, or even simply drive students to/from field trips, MUST complete a volunteer training through the school in order to be allowed to participate in field trips. You will be declined to chaperone a field trip during this year if you have not attended one of our volunteer trainings, even if the field trip is as far away as May. We will NOT hold individual training sessions. The only three opportunities you have to attend a volunteer training are:
  • Thursday, October 1 @ 8:15am
  • Friday, October 9 @ 8:15am
  • Tuesday, October 13 @ 2:40pm
Click here to sign up for a training session. Each training takes about 10-15 minutes without Q&A. You must attend the entire training in order to be listed as a trained volunteer.
Singapore Math Info Session

Our school's math curriculum for elementary and middle school is called Singapore Math. You may have noticed how it is different from the way you were taught math and your child is working math problems differently than you may be used to. Please attend our Singapore math info session to learn about our math curriculum in greater detail to understand  how your child is learning math in school and how s/he is expected to complete homework, quizzes, and tests.

The info session will be held on Friday, October 2 @ 8:15am in the school hall.
Chuck-e-Cheese School Fundraiser & Eid Party!

Our students had a blast last year at our school's Chuck-e-Cheese night. Our PTA is hosting the event again this year for Friday, October 2 from 3pm-9pm. A percentage of all profit from the night of any customers Chuck-e-Cheese has, whether they are ILM Academy families or not, will go to the school!

Come on out for a fun family night to celebrate Eid with the rest of the school and to help us fundraise. Invite as many others you wish! The more, the better!

All students will be sent home on Friday, October 2 with a sticker that gives them 10 FREE tokens to get their gaming groove started at Chuck-e-Cheese that night.

Order Karate Uniforms

The morning of Tuesday, September 29 is the last chance for you to purchase karate uniforms through Sensei Saif. Sensei Saif has checked your Montessori level 3 through 6th grade child(ren)'s karate uniform sizes. You will need to either purchase the uniform through him (a check payable to Samurai Karate Dojo for $35 with your child's name in the memo) or buy it elsewhere. If your child already has a uniform that fits, he/she should be bringing it to school every Tuesday to wear for class.
MAP Testing

You may have noticed that we will have a couple of weeks of MAP testing coming up soon for our 1st-8th graders. A detailed email will be sent to all 1st-8th grade parents to explain what MAP testing is, why we conduct it, and how it helps your student and the school. Please stay tuned.
Seeking Committees Members

We are looking for additional members to join our Accreditation Committee or Finance Committee, both of which we will be finalizing soon. A committee is a branch off from our Advisory Panel (the school board). If you are interested, please respond to this email and we will discuss our needs and your qualifications to determine the best fit for the goals of the committees.
Pertinent Safety Reminders

Tardies and Absences

You will soon be receiving letters if your 1st-8th grade child has had an excessive number of unexcused absences or tardies. Excused absences/tardies are those due to illness, medical appointments, etc. The full policy can be read in our Parent-Student Handbook, which is always linked at the top of these Weekly News emails.

To excuse your child's illness, appointment, etc., please simply send an email to your child's homeroom teacher stating the reason for their tardy or absence or send in a written note with your child.

Though tardies/absences are not counted against a Montessori child (and therefore you are not required to send in notes/emails), it is best for your child to arrive to school on time in order to be present for the full class routine and work time. We would also like to be informed of the Montessori (or ECC) child's absence at least via email so we know why s/he is not in school.
ANY Student Arriving after 8:10

Whether your Montessori, elementary, or middle school student is arriving after 8:10am, s/he MUST be signed in on the yellow log at the front desk. We have this procedure in place for security reasons.

To do this, you MUST PARK your car in a parking spot and walk in to sign in your child. You may not send in your child by him/herself into the school. You also may not leave your car parked or running in the roundabout circle while you walk your children in or sign them in.

There is no reason for any cars to be in the roundabout circle after 8:10am, so there also should be no reason for cars to have to back out of the roundabout (which should never be done, for safety reasons), unless permission was sought to drop off bulk snacks/supplies.
Keeping Students Home When Sick

All students MUST be kept home if they have had a fever, vomited, or had diarrhea in the last 24 hours.

This may mean that your child was ill until a Sunday morning at 10am and thereafter was fine, however, s/he may not return to school until after 10am on Monday to ensure the illness has been cleared.

In general, please avoid sending your child to school if s/he is ill at all, in order to avoid getting other students sick. Please do not risk it.

The full policy on these health concerns can be read in our Parent-Student Handbook, which is linked at the top of every one of these Weekly News emails. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our students healthy and safe.
