oneMontessori Language Info Session
The Montessori language info session will be held on Tuesday, September 16 from about 8-8:30am. This is a voluntary session for Montessori parents to attend to learn more about the Montessori English language program at our school. The session will take place in Ms. Sumera's Montessori classroom. If your child is in Ms. Sumera's class, please drop them off to Ms. Tania's classroom for that morning. Ms. Mari's students should proceed to Ms. Mari's class as usual.
Mosquito Bites and West Nile Virus

There have been mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus found in the Houston area and generally students have been getting a lot of mosquito bites lately. To protect your child from mosquitoes, please spray your child with repellent before sending him/her to school. Another option is to rub baby oil on them before school or giving them a mosquito repelling bracelet, anklet, or clip to wear while at school. Also, if you gave the school permission to spray your child with anti-itch spray, we will do so in case if your child gets a bite while at school.

Volunteer Training Session

The school will be holding a volunteer training session on Wednesday, September 24 from 8:10-8:40am in the 3rd grade classroom. This session is mandatory for anyone wishing to volunteer with classes in which you will be responsible for supervising students, such as chaperoning for field trips. The training session is going to go over school policies of monitoring students, transportation, and safety. You will also be required to sign a form at the end of the session agreeing to abide by those policies any time you are responsible for ILM Academy students. Again, please understand this session is mandatory if you ever wish to chaperone a field trip.
twoOdyssey of the Mind Coaches Needed
Our school participates in the Odyssey of the Mind creative problem-solving tournament annually. In the past couple of years we have had teams advance to the State Finals and even the World Finals. To learn more about Odyssey and what the responsibilities of a coach are, please respond to this email and we will get with you about the details.

Please note that this year we may only have 2 Odyssey teams (total of 12-14 participating students out of the 100+ KG-7th graders) because only that many coaches are available. If more coaches sign up, we can accommodate more teams insha'Allah
Girl Scouts/Boy Scouts Volunteers Needed

The Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts troops which are formed mostly of students from ILM Academy will begin soon. In order to fully launch, the troops are in need of more moms, dads, or other family members who can be troop/den leaders. If you are interested in either, please contact Tanzeela Aziz at 713-543-1581 or [email protected].

Khateebs Needed

The 1st-7th grade students attend Jummah prayers at the school every week. For the prayers, we are always in need of dads or other men from the community to deliver the khutbahs. The khutbah only needs to be 5-10 minutes and the school can provide the topic if the khateeb prefers. Jummah prayer is from 1:25-1:45 (this includes the khutbah and prayer). If you or someone you know would like to volunteer, please respond to this email.
threeECC Parent-Student Handbook
The Parent-Student Handbook for ECC parents is now available via the Orbund repository and through the link in the Resources section of these newsletters. If you are an ECC parent, please familiarize yourself with the handbook.
Remind App for Emergency Mass Texting

Please download the free Remind app on your smart phone by following the instructions here. We are asking all parents to download this app so that in case of an emergency which needs to be communicated to you urgently. Examples of such an emergency include sudden school closings due to weather or other emergency events. We are moving to this form of mass texting as our past method has not been as reliable. Also, we will continue sending emails as quickly as we can as well in such situations.

Your child's teacher may also be asking you to download and use this app for classroom purposes. Please note that joining a classroom's Remind app section is separate from joining the school's. You will need to join both groups on your Remind app to receive notifications from both. Again, please follow the instructions here to help you sign up for the Remind app school wide group.

Student Council Campaigning

If your 1st-7th grade child is running for a position in the Student Council this year, their application confirmation was given to them today via a letter and also to you via email. This letter/email now allows your child to campaign for his/her position next week from Monday-Thursday by posting up posters, signs, banners, etc. by seeking school permission first. No goods can be handed out such as candies, pencils, etc. They may hand out stickers, postcards, and buttons, as long as they have been approved. All campaign materials must be turned in to their homeroom teachers and may request for the materials to be posted up around the classroom (if running for class rep) or the school (if running for an executive position). Please allow your child to use his/her own creativity to run their campaign as this is a fun learning experience for them. Elections will be held on Friday insha'Allah
