February 7, 2018

Dear St. Francis of Assisi Parents and Guardians,

The last two weeks have been a celebration of our school through the Gospel message, community, fun activities, worship, and volunteerism integrated into the daily experience of the students, parents, and staff who share in the mission of Catholic education at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School.

Our Catholic identity is at the core of our mission so kicking off the annual Catholic Schools Week celebration at our three parishes was a proper beginning to a week of highlighting the many beautiful qualities of Catholic education at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School. Students dressed in Mass uniform and families took an active role at parish Masses by offering testimonials, bringing up the gifts, serving refreshments, and distributing Open House flyers. Our presence at the parishes, along with the leadership of our parish liaisons, was instrumental in promoting our school and ensuring a very successful Open House.

Another important activity leading up to Catholic Schools Week is the General Parent meeting at which time we recognize student achievement by presenting our academic testing results and school accomplishments. The data presented at the meeting reflects outstanding student achievement honed by dedicated educators in collaboration with parents. The advancement of our plans to enhance school facilities, healthy enrollment, and a balanced budget are strong indicators that our school is moving in a positive direction.

Open House, the official start to Catholic Schools Week, was a wonderful success. The windy weather huffed and puffed but could not disrupt an otherwise beautiful day. Over ninety percent of our current families visited classrooms and sixty-two prospective families toured the school. For the second consecutive year, we had prospective parents arrive to school early, prepared to submit applications for the 2018/2019 school year. Thanks to great planning and outstanding support, the game plan for Open House was perfectly executed. Our guests and families were treated to a wonderful experience.  This was a "team" effort.  Everyone contributed to the day's success.

Catholic Schools Week was filled with meaningful and fun activities. My favorite memories include our students guiding tours and the choir performing at Open House, the creative ways students expressed themselves with crazy hats, socks, and hair, and the excitement and energy students displayed at rallies. Meaningful activities took place as well. We showed appreciation for our volunteers by preparing a delicious breakfast for them and 8th grade teacher Ann Cooper was recognized by the Diocese of Orange for her 25 years of service as a Catholic school teacher. Elementary students were treated to an entertaining talk from children's author Scott Sussman. It was great to see our families gather as a community at Open House, family lunch and Mass.

Catholic Schools Week and and the events leading up to it, were a wonderful celebration of Catholic education at St Francis of Assisi Catholic School. I am profoundly grateful for the many ways you make St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School a great community. "You" includes the teachers and staff, the parents, extended family, and guardians, the Pastors and parish communities, and most important, our students. I am both honored and proud to be part of such a generous and loving community. Thank you for your support and service to our school.

WOLF NEWS- Student Journalism Program
PENCILS DOWN! THE HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT TEST AND HOW STUDENTS COPE
A WOLF News Press Corps Report by Student Journalist, Michael C.

Each year, thousands of 8th graders across the country going into Catholic high schools take the High School Placement Test (HSPT): an exam made to show a student's critical thinking and problem-solving skills.  This test determines whether or not a student is placed in honors classes at many high schools, and is required to be taken by all students wishing to enter.  For many students, this is the first time they've ever taken a test that would put so much pressure on them.  There are many ways students prepare and cope with the stress the test creates.
