Dear St. Francis of Assisi Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year!  I am very much looking forward to journeying with your families at St. Francis of Assisi School.  We spent the last week of summer inservicing as staff and faculty. Our meetings were filled with new ideas, dedicated time for prayer and reflection, and great conversation about planning for this school year.  There is a buzz of excitement for this school year as we celebrate our 20th Anniversary as a school community.

On Friday, all faculty in the Diocese of Orange met for Convocation at Santa Margarita High School.  Dr. Leonard DeLorenzo, alumni of Mater Dei High School, who now teaches theology at Notre Dame, inspired us with the importance of telling our stories.  Storytelling allows the narrator to share their perspective on an event in their life and how this event shaped who they are today. When I stepped onto this campus sixteen years ago to meet with Debbie Vallas, our founding Principal, I knew there was something different and unique here.  Every year, I have experienced the Spirit of St. Francis through the dedication of the faculty and staff, watching the students grow from the beginning of the year to the end, and through the movement of the Holy Spirit in our families that choose to not only educate their students but also partner with the school and parishes to build up the foundation of faith that will guide our youth beyond these gates.

One of my favorite moments of the school year is the first morning of school.  Awakening early with animated anticipation of what the day will bring, waiting on campus for the students to arrive, we were greeted with a beautiful sunrise on the hill - one of the many gifts of this first day. Families demonstrated perseverance by bringing their school supplies in wagons and backpacks down the hill from the park. Joy was seen on many faces as "first day of school" pictures were taken with the 20th Anniversary backdrop.  We gathered as a community in prayer with Fr. Wayne from San Antonio de Padua Church. He shared that teachers are closest to Jesus' heart as he too had a ministry of teaching. He encouraged our "modern day disciples", our students, and invited them to be witnesses to the Gospel in all they say and do.

May this year be richly blessed for your students and may they know "the peace of Christ that surpasses all understanding." (Phil 4:7)  Thank you for entrusting your children to our care this year!
