Calling all Key Holders
Do you have a key to Temple Sinai?  If so, we need to know.  We are in the process of performing a Key Audit, and need an accounting of everyone who currently has a key to the Temple.  If you have a key (even if you are a current Board Member), please call or email the Temple Office and let us know.

We need this information NO LATER than August 7.

***Please note that on Wednesday, August 12, all Security System entry codes will be erased and new codes programmed.  If you have notified us that you have a key and are authorized to keep it, an alarm code will be issued to you.   If you do not let us know that you have a key, and you attempt to enter the building using an expired code and set off the alarm, you will be financially responsible for the South Burlington Police Department response fee.***

COMMUNITY EVENTS / INFORMATION TO SHARE
The "Dahg" Days of Summer

In November of 2014, Dahg (the "house" band at Temple Sinai of South Burlington), participated in the Jewish Communities of Vermont's Summit 2014 in Killington. We presented a workshop on our Rock Shabbat and provided entertainment for the summit attendees.  Inspired by the music (if not the wine consumed during Havdalah), we were asked by a number of representatives of other Temples to bring Rock Shabbat to their congregations.  Because we love to play, and because they promised to feed us, we jumped on the opportunity.  On June 5, 2015, we performed a Rock Shabbat at the Jewish Community of Greater Stowe.

During the month of July, we will be performing at the following congregations:

July 17 -  Israel Congregation of Manchester

July 24 -  Temple Beth El in St. Johnsbury

July 31 -  Rutland Jewish Center's 2nd Annual

"Shabbat Unbound" at Lake Bomoseen

Future dates include Beth Jacob Synagogue in Montpelier and possibly a trip across the lake to Temple Beth Israel in Plattsburgh, NY.

We're enthusiastic about what we do and find that the deviation from traditional worship reinvigorates regular worshipers and attracts less-than-regular worshipers.  The mix of musical styles seems to appeal to young and old alike.  While we do not charge for the Rock Shabbat services, donations to Temple Sinai, some of which defray our costs, are much appreciated.

JCOGS invites you to meet the author

Thursday evening, July 30th at 7:30pm, Anita Diamant, one of the most celebrated American writers of historical fiction, will appear at The Jewish Community of Greater Stowe (JCOGS). She will discuss her career as an author and journalist, and the influences Judaism has had on her work.

Anita Diamant is the best-selling author of the novels The Boston Girl, The Red Tent, Good Harbor, The Last Days of Dogtown, and Day After Night, and the collection of essays, Pitching My Tent.Diamant's novels expertly take snippets of history and build captivating stories around them. Diamant is best known for her 1997 novel The Red Tent, which was recently adapted as a miniseries by Lifetime TV. Her most recent work, The Boston Girl, is a coming-of-age story about family ties and values, friendship and feminism, told through the eyes of a young Jewish woman growing up in Boston in the early twentieth century.

An award-winning journalist whose work has appeared in The Boston Globe Magazine and Parenting, she is the author of six nonfiction guides to contemporary Jewish life, including Choosing a Jewish Life, How to Raise a Jewish Child, The New Jewish Wedding, and Saying Kaddish.

Seating is limited. Advance tickets are $10 online at jcogs.org until July 27th, or $15 at the door, based on availability. Doors will open at 7pm.  JCOGS is located at 1189 Cape Cod Road in Stowe.

Shop With Scrip at Your Favorite Merchants
What is Scrip?

Scrip is a way to fundraise for Temple Sinai while you shop. Instead of using your credit card to pay for groceries, gas, clothing, restaurants, pharmacy and household items, you simply use gift cards purchased through Scrip, and the retailers donate a percentage of the sale to Temple. Check out the ShopWithScrip.com website to see all the participating retailers.

What retailers actually donate a significant percentage of the sale to Temple?

Many of the retailers donate between 2 and 7% , but some are "high rollers" and donate as much as 25% of the sale (Fannie May Chocolates!). You can check out these "high rollers" by going to the ShopWithScrip.com website, click on "shop" in the upper right corner, then click on "rebate %" on the left hand side, and finally click on ">9%" also on the left hand side.  Some of the "High Rollers" in our area include:

  • LL Bean and Lands End 16%
  • Gap, Athleta, Old Navy, and Banana Republic 14%
  • J Crew, Talbots, and Bath and Body Works  13%
  • Uno Chicago Grill 12%
  • Under Armour and Chili's Bar and Grille 11%
  • Macy's, Eddie Bauer, and Chipotle 10%
  • Olive Garden and Panera Bread 9%

Gift Cards Are a Great Idea for Mother's Day, Birthdays, Benai Mitzvot, and Graduation!

Signing up for Scrip is easy, and then you can get a lot of the gift cards electronically. But if you don't want to sign up, or you want the actual plastic gift cards, just let me know what you would like to order. Thanks so much for your interest!

To order, email Barbara Burroughs or give her a call at 802-985-9329.

Only a 15 cent service fee to you, and Temple makes anywhere from 2% - 19% on your purchase. Easiest fundraiser ever (next to Hannaford). Do your part--sign up for Scrip today!
