  Words of Joy

The best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others.
-Mohandas
Gandhi

As my time among you comes to a close, I want to thank all of you who have so unselfishly volunteered your time to this congregation over the past two years, in so many different ways. Volunteers are the foundation of congregational life, and in this congregation, a very high proportion of the membership volunteers in one way or another (and often in many ways at once!). I have enjoyed working with so many dedicated people. You are truly amazing!

Thank you all, many times over.
Joy

Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation's compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain loving one another.    --Erma Brombeck

P.S. We may have one final new member ceremony this church year, on one of the Sundays in June. If you are interested in joining UUCM, please speak with me (minister@uumarin.org  510 821-2394) or with membership Chair Thomas Ervin.
RE nUUs
jef melcher
Memorial Day is an uneasy holiday for me. I tend not to have a BBQ or go shopping. It is a day of complicated feelings for the veterans, the peace movement, my relatives who have served in the service, and how to talk to my daughter about it all. We had a brief car conversation this year where I reviewed the intent of the day to remember the fallen, yet also mentioned my conundrum about the unneeded US wars around the world. "War is a failure of diplomacy." - John Dingell. May we strive to teach our children diplomacy guided by a strong compassionate heart and a mind filled with gentle morality.

Our RE year is coming to a close. This Sunday is RE Sunday where the kids come and make a small presentation in our celebratory multi-generational service. Parents of children and youth grades 4-12 please have your children arrive by 10AM if possible. We need to do a run through of the program. And bring your cameras. Cuteness will abound.

The YRUU are having a 24-hour hangout at UUCM June 16th, noon - June 17th noon. Other congregations will be joining us too. Please RSVP to  Jef  if you haven't already.

We are looking for a few good activities led by regular RE teachers and other volunteers. Please sign up   HERE. I will not have summer hours with UUCM this Summer so I can only arrange until June 13th. Please sign up in the next few weeks. There is also a sign-up board in the foyer. Come share some fun with the kids ages 7-12.

Last week we received a letter of resignation from our Lead Youth Advisor, George Pegelow. He will stay until the end of this June. George has shared his passions for life and youth empowerment. We are grateful for the zest he has shown, and the deep caring he has for the youth's future on this planet. We will have a thank you celebration cake for him at the RE Sunday as a small token of appreciation for his work with us. Please plan to attend.

Brief Calendar:
  • June 1 - Game Night

  • June 3rd - RE Sunday and UUCM Annual meeting

  • June 8th - YRUU Parent and Youth meeting

  • June 10th - Flower communion and end of year potluck

  • June 16th - YRUU 24-hour

  • June 17th - Rev Joy's last sermon at UUCM w/ lunch to follow. No RE, but Nursery-K1 classroom will be staffed.

  • Aug 26th - Fall RE starts

  • Aug 26th, noon-1pm - Information meeting for Our Whole Lives program. All parents, visitors, and congregants welcome.

And one more thing ... consider ways to involve your children in your voting process. I started my daughter out filling in the arrows on my mail-in ballot when she was six years old.

Have a great weekend! See you Sunday.

Celebrate With Joy!
blue_star.jpg
On June 17th, following the service, we will honor Rev. Joy Atkinson, who is concluding a successful 2 year interim ministry with us and beginning her own transition into retirement after 41 years of ministry.

We invite everyone reading this to write a letter, note, card-or pen a cartoon, poem, or drawing-in celebration of Rev. Joy . These will be included in a scrapbook we are creating.

Please be part of the process! Sharing a memory, reflection or funny anecdote can be done in just a few moments.  (Really you will be amazed at what you can write in 5 minutes or less; and you will feel good about doing it and she will feel good reading it).  So good all around.....

You can put items in Kat Braeman's box in the Community Room or send things via email to  drckerr@pacbell.net .

We would appreciate having items by June 10th if possible.

Thanks for helping make this happen...

Share Something Fun
Between mid-June and August regular Religious Exploration classes do not meet, but we like to have youth-friendly activities available for UUCM kids and visiting families at a table in the foyer.  Do you have a craft, game, or outdoor activity  for ages 6 to teens that you would be willing to share on one Sunday ?

There is a sign-up board in the foyer or you can email dreuumarin@gmail.com between now and 6/13.  Everyone's inner child needs some exercising now and then....Lend a hand, bring a friend, share the fun....

Our developmental minister Rev. Marcus Hartlief will be joining us this fall.  Until then, he has created a website for you to get to know more about him.  The home page is a letter to the congregation. Other pages cover his story, his ministry, and examples of his writings. We encourage you to take a moment to view the website. Here is the link:

Dinners for Eight
"Food is our common ground, a universal experience." James Beard. Get to know other members of the congregation eating dinners in their homes through Dinners for Eight (or Six).  We would love to have more participants for the last dinner of the year on June 2nd.

Readers' Theater
UUCM Readers' Theater invites members and friends to join our fun-loving group. We meet twice a month, on the second and fourth Monday of each month, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at UUCM. Most of the time, we read short plays aloud when we meet, but every 6-8 weeks we rehearse and then present short prose or poems during a service. No memorizing required, but you should be willing to ham it up and be silly. Information: Jan Seagrave ( janseagrave@gmail.com ).
