Friends of the Indy Winter Farmers Market! If you haven't been downtown this week, you should come and enjoy the energy that has descended in the countdown for the Big Game. In addition to stocking up on all your needs at the IWFM, there are many fun and interesting events to enjoy, from shopping on Mass Ave, the Local Underground Tent at Sunking Brewery, the IDADA Turf Art Pavillion, and of course the Super Bowl Village

The IWFM will be OPEN this Saturday, January 28th and next Saturday, February 4th. We hope you will show your SUPER support for your favorite vendors, as they journey into town to feed you and the many visitors arriving to town. Those who live too far to drive can still enjoy FREE PARKING this Saturday, Jan. 28th. Next week, Feb. 4th, we encourage you to take the bus, enjoy a bicycling trip to market, and walk for those in the downtown area. Feb. 4th we'll be giving away door prizes to shoppers, and vendors are preparing special products for your Big Game party needs.

Join us for a SUPER celebration! See you Saturday!

Be well,

Laura, Molly and the IWFM team

FREE PARKING for January 28

Please note that the free parking lot this week will be the lot on the southeast corner of Alabama and Market. Continue south on Alabama through the light at Market, and take the next left into the parking lot. As usual, look for the sign that says, "Lot Unattended."  The normal free lot on the northeast corner will not be available. There will be no free parking on February 4th.

IWFM Packed Lunch Menu Challenge:

How to Eat Well on a Budget

While we aspire to eat well every day, sometimes it gets difficult to afford the best ingredients and the freshest, healthiest meals. How can we Eat Well on a budget? Here is a recent post from CrazySexyLife, Kris Carr's blog about health, healing, food and wellness. In it, she details how we can stretch our dollar further while still nourishing our bodies. Learning to love the preparation, time, thought, and energy that goes into our food helps us appreciate our meals even more, and we can cut our food costs and increase our connectedness with our food by eating out less, cooking more at home, and even by putting thought into the lunches we pack for ourselves.

We believe there are a lot of great ideas for packed lunches in the IWFM community, and we want to hear yours! Please submit your favorite adult or child packed-lunch menu by January 28th. You can email your menu to
info@indywinterfarmersmarket.org, or submit it in writing at the IWFM Market Info Table. We will select the four most creative (and achievable) packed-lunch menus to include in our February weekly e-newsletters. Those highlighting foods available at the IWFM will earn bonus points!

On Saturday, February 25th, the IWFM will hold our first ever packed-lunch competition! More details will follow, but prizes will be awarded in 5 categories:
1) Most Creative School Lunch - Popular Children's Vote,
2) Most Creative Work Lunch - Popular Adult Vote,
3) Most IWFM Product Ingredients - Juried,
4) Most Nutritious & Delicious - Juried,
5) Coolest Lunch-Box/Packing Method - Juried.
(Voting will be based on menu and presentation, not on tastings.)

Super Bowl Info for IWFM Customers

Indy Swappers' next swap will be on Saturday, January 28th at The Earth House Collective. And it's not going to be just a swap. On the eve of Super Bowl Week here in Indianapolis, it's going to be a SUPER Swap! There will be the regular food swap, as well as several fun educational programs, all free and open to the public. The festivities will kick off at noon at Earth House with presentations from interesting and informed folks, ready to share their knowledge and answer your questions. Here is the schedule of events:

12:30pm- Composting 101 (Keith O'Dell, Castaway Composting)

1:00pm- Food Swap Primer (Suzanne Krowiak, Founder, Indy Food Swappers)

1:30pm- Pickling Demo (Kate Payne, Author, The Hip Girl's Guide to Homemaking, credited with birthing the current food swap movement)

2:00 - 4:00pm- FOOD SWAP TIME! This is where the magic happens.
