News from The Episcopal Cafe
From the Rector

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Mary's,

As I am out and about in the community attending community forums and meeting with business people and clergy from other churches, I am finding that many people know about our Community Meal Program. Our monthly meal program is definitely getting known in the community, which is very exciting. This past month we had many new volunteers and saw a number of new dinner guests from the community. We also received enough in free will donations to cover the expenses for the meal. Thank you to everyone who volunteered and participated in this month's meal. Thank you chef Tom and our cooking crew for another delicious menu. Our next Community Meal is July 15 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. We will post a menu soon.

I know that many of our parishioners and friends are traveling this summer but if you are around please mark your calendars and join us for some of our summer offerings, which include centering Prayer on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m., and Lawn Chair Theologians on July 12 th and August 9 th . Mark your calendars for July 1 st for our Senior Lunch at 11:30 a.m., and Sunday July 2 nd , as Sandy leads us in the singing of patriotic hymns at both the 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. services.

Blessings,
Fran

June Vestry Highlights

For their annual retreat this year, the Vestry will be attending the Diocesan Anti-Racism Training, which will be held at Chicago Theological Union Seminary in Hyde Park.  It begins Thursday, October 12 th at 6:00 p.m., and will end Saturday, Oct. 14 th at 5:00 p.m.   Mike Choquette has found us affordable lodging at the seminary conveniently located in the dorm.   Each room has a private bath.   All vestry members are asked to RSVP to Mike no later than July 7 th so that he can book our lodging.  The Bishop is aware we are taking the training and is very excited and encouraged that our vestry is making this type of training a priority.  All ordained clergy and diocesan staff have been doing this training for a number years as it has been a diocesan priority.  The anti-racism committee is aware that we are signing up for this training as well.

The Vestry discussed the community meal and how happy they are with the number of new people we have met and engaged both as dinner guests and volunteers.  The meal committee is making a big push to continue to get the word out about the meal through flyers, the news papers, visiting social service agencies and other organizations, as well as continued neighborhood door hanger bags with notices.  Fran made mention that it has been advertised on the local radio station and through other churches as well.  In June we covered our meal expenses with free will offerings and we got most of the food donated by Midwest Produce.  We also received a bread donation from Fresh Thyme and a flower donation from Jewel.

Judy Thornton discussed the need to monitor and mark the trash dumpsters in the parking lot as coffee cups have been thrown into the lawn waste container.  The company will not pick up the lawn waste container if other garage is in the container.   We are making every effort to speak to all the groups that throw out trash.  A new sign will also be posted so the container is clearly marked.

We will not have a vestry meeting in July.  The next meeting is August 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Note: Minutes of Vestry meetings are posted on the bulletin board and are available from the church office. The minutes and monthly financial reports are posted and available following vestry approval of these documents.
