News from The Episcopal Cafe
From the Rector

Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Mary's,

This Saturday, June 17, is our next Community Meal.  This is a great opportunity to get together with other parishioners from St. Mary's and a great way to meet new people from the community.  Dinner is served from 5:00-7:00 p.m. so stop on by with friends, family and neighbors.  A free will offering will be accepted if you wish to make a donation.  All are welcome!  We have flyers and post cards which we are always posting throughout Crystal Lake.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been working hard to keep our 5 acres of land looking lovely.  Thank you to Jim Dingle who mows the lawn every week, to Judy and Ted Thornton who have been trimming bushes and weeding, and to Eileen Flynn who filled our outdoor pots with lovely plants.   If you love being outdoors and can help weed flower beds, and water plants over the summer, please talk with me.  Your help would be greatly appreciated.

This Sunday please join us at our coffee hour reception after the 10:00 a.m. service in honor of Betty and Steve Buenning and Betty's mom, Ann McCraw.  Betty, Steve, and Ann are moving to Maryland to live closer to family.  Betty and Steve raised their children at St. Mary's and have been a part of this parish since 1983. They have forged many deep friendships over the years and will be greatly missed.  They are in the process of selling their home and packing so we will still see them from time to time over the summer but we wanted to celebrate now before many parishioners left for vacations.

May all of our fathers have a happy and blessed Father's Day.

A Little Humor to Brighten Your Day

The following was received from Dn. Barb, who received it from Andrew Hoelzel, son of our former Rector, Rev. Bill Hoelzel.    It's been around for a while, but still very funny.  Enjoy!

An atheist was walking through the woods. "What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!" he said to himself.

As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him.  He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him.  He ran as fast as he could up the path.  He looked over his shoulder & saw that the bear was closing in on him.  He looked over his shoulder again, & the bear was even closer.  He tripped & fell on the ground.

He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw & raising his right paw to strike him.  At that instant the atheist cried out, "Oh my God!  Time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent.

As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. "You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don't exist, and even credit creation to cosmic accident?" Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?"

The atheist looked directly into the light, "It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the BEAR a Christian?"

"Very well," said the voice.  The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed.  And the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head & spoke: "Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen."
