News from The Episcopal Cafe

From the Rector

Dear Friends and Parishioners of St. Mary's,

This Sunday we will continue to celebrate the fifty-day season of Easter. I invite you to continue to contemplate where you see and experience the Risen Christ in your life. As we celebrate the Risen Christ in our midst it is also an opportunity for us to reflect on how we show forth Christ in the world as individuals and as a community of faith. I believe that one concrete way St. Mary's is witnessing to the resurrection is through our monthly community meal. Last Saturday we served 74 meals and connected with many people in and around Crystal Lake, providing hospitality, and a wonderful meal. We also continue to be a place where volunteers find ways to give back and make a difference in people's lives. This past month we had 10 high school students who needed their service hours. They have told us that this is the best place to volunteer and they want to continue to be with us. This ministry has truly become a place of service and connection. Many of us are truly having a great time doing it from month to month. Our next meal is Saturday, May 19 from 5:00-7:00 pm. Please consider joining us.

This Saturday at 10:30 a.m. we will celebrate the life and ministry of our deacon, Barb Bishop.   The service will be followed by a catered lunch in the Great Hall with overflow seating in the church school wing. We will have plenty of food so please plan on attending this celebration. Bishop Jeff Lee had wanted to be with us, however due to schedule conflicts he will not be able to be here. The celebration will be grand as many deacons are coming from both in and outside of the Diocese of Chicago, and many of Barb's friends and family will be in attendance. Bill Hoelzel, who served as the rector here from 1976-2007, will also be with us and preside over the internment in the Churchyard.

Barb loved this parish and she was a faithful servant and deacon at St. Mary's for 26 years. I hope you will join us as we celebrate her life.

If you are planning on attending Barb's service and you are able, please park on Church or Grove Streets. These streets can hold many cars and if the choir, ushers, altar party and all who are arriving early park on the street it will open up spaces for our seniors and guests. I believe it will be a glorious day.

Blessings,
Fran +
Farewell to Suzanne Anderson

Next Sunday, May 6, at the 8:00 a.m. service, Fran will offer a blessing for Suzanne Anderson.   Suzanne is moving from Huntley to Carol Stream, and we will be wishing her a fond farewell at the 8:00 a.m. Coffee Hour. Suzanne has been a member here at St. Mary's since December 2000. We wish her all the best in this new chapter of her life.

Calling All Bilingual Parishioners!

Do you speak another language in addition to English?   Then we want you at the 10:00 a.m. Pentecost service on Sunday, May 20 ! As you may or may not know, we have a wonderful Pentecost tradition here at St. Mary's. The Pentecost reading of the Acts of the Apostles 2:1-21 is read in several different languages simultaneously, to illustrate the scripture passage: "All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability." (Acts 2:4)

In the past we've had speakers in Spanish, French, Italian, Latin, German, Greek, and even Russian! Any language is welcome!!!!   If you are interested, please contact Amy in the office. She will get you a copy of the reading in your preferred language, or you may use your own foreign-language Bible if you have one.
