From the Rector

Dear Friends and Parishioners of St. Mary's,

This week our gospel lesson reminds us that we are called to be the salt of the earth and a light to the world. In these troubled times that we are living in, let us be true to our baptismal vows, which call us to seek and serve Christ in all persons, and to respect the dignity of every human being. In a world where tempers seem to be flaring and people on all sides of the many issues we face are treating others with contempt, let us demonstrate the love of Christ and love our neighbors as ourselves. Let us pray for our nation and the world that we may build communities which show forth the peace and hope of Christ. Yes, it is a challenge but let us remember that we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to live out the ministry of Christ in all things.

I want to thank everyone who took time out to participate in our annual meeting last Sunday and to be engaged in the work of this wonderful parish. There are extra copies of our annual report on the table at the back of the church. My deepest thanks to everyone who volunteered at our community meal fundraiser and to those who attended the meal. I am happy to report the cost of the meal was completely covered by the donations as we made $2,376.00. Our monthly meal will be held on the third Saturday of the month and is free to all. We are taking a free will offering for anyone who would like to make a donation. Please mark your calendars for the next meal on February 18, 5:00-7:00 p.m. This is a great opportunity to invite friends, neighbors, family members and others you encounter to St. Mary's.

If you love pets then your help is needed at a pet adoption event run by "On Angels Wings" on Saturday, February 11th. Adults and youth are invited to participate. Youth under the age of 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There is more information in this newsletter below if you are interested. This project is sponsored by our youth group and grew out of their service which focused on caring for all God's creatures.

See you all Sunday,
Fran+

In case you missed the Annual Parish meeting last Sunday, copies of t he 2016 Annual Parish Report and information about our new Vestry members are available on a Narthex table . The report contains a wealth of information about our parish and all the wonderful ministries we offer, as well as summaries of all our accomplishments during 2016.

Congratulations to the following parishioners who were elected to the Vestry: Co-Warden, Marge Smith; Vestry members, Peter Carroll, Tracy Higgins, Dan McLaughlin, Tracy Higgins, Judy Thornton, and Sally Van Vranken.

Volunteers /
Animal Lovers Needed

On Angel's Wings Pet Rescue has asked for some help. They will be hosting two pet adoption events on Saturday, February 11th , and they are looking for some volunteers to help set up, handle the animals, and clean up at the events. The pet adoptions will be held at PETCO in Crystal Lake, and at HAHS (Hooved Animal Humane Society). They are looking for both youth and adult volunteers . * Youth, ages 13 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

We will meet at 10:00 am at On Angel's Wings, 5186 Northwest Highway #133, Crystal Lake, to get our assignments and travel to the pet adoption centers. We should be back at On Angel's Wings by about 3:00 pm.

For more information or to volunteer please contact Mike Choquette.

Whenever you did one of these things for someone overlooked or ignored,

you did it for me.

PADS Dinners

St. Mary's is once again supporting the PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) program by providing meals at the PADS Shelters during the winter months. Our final scheduled volunteer date for the 2016/17 season is Sunday, February 19. We are looking for volunteers, including older youth, who would like to cook, shop, and/or serve the evening meal at Bethany Lutheran Church, the Sunday shelter location.

Thank you to Mary Frake who is once again coordinating the PADS Ministry for St. Mary's. Please contact Mary here, and let her know how you can help.  Thanks for your support!

February Community Meal

The first of our monthly Community Meals is February 18th. This is an amazing opportunity to reach beyond our walls and into the community. If you would like to volunteer, please sign up in the Great Hall, or speak with Rev. Fran, or Tracy Higgins.   Our free community meal will be offered the 3rd Saturday of every month, and ALL ARE WELCOME.   Please mark you calendars and join us on Saturday, February 18!
