Cast Your Vote

Absentee voting for the District 196 School Board election begins September 22.  Voters can cast their ballot on Election Day, Tuesday, November 7 at their designated school district polling place, by absentee ballot beginning September 22 or through early in-person voting during the week before Election Day.  Eight candidates are vying for three seats.  For more information on voting, click here.
Local Budgets and Tax Levies Rolling Out

It's that time of year again when local municipalities (city, county, school) set their annual budgets and tax levies for the coming year.  Why should you care? Because each of their respective budgets roll up into your property tax statement(s).  D o the math - 3 x 3 = 9.  If each local municipality proposed a three percent increase, your total property tax statement would increase by 9 percent (without any added value in your property).

What can you do? Stay informed. Use your voice. Contact your local elected officials or staff and find out what the proposed increase will be.  Or maybe its a decrease?  These proposals must be certified by the end of September.  From now through December, you can also attend meetings and public hearings to learn more and ask questions.

Watch this space for detailed information regarding the proposed increases as they become available.

Never Forget
american_flag.jpg On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people were killed, 400 were police officers and firefighters, in the terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City, at the Pentagon building in Washington, D.C., and in a plane crash near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.  Today we remember.

Member Spotlight: Access and Opportunities

Murray Wilson, Dakota County Library
Ever since I first thought about a career, I wanted to be a librarian. Doing research and tracking down information is something I enjoy, and, of course, books and reading! Librarians help people achieve many goals, from utilizing technology to educating their children. The process of guiding people to resources and increasing their understanding is satisfying to me and, I hope, empowering for them. Recently I passed a remarkable milestone of forty years with Dakota County library!

I've been involved in the Chamber in the different communities where I've worked. The Chamber allows me the access I need to meet the local community and learn about civic organizations. The Chamber gives me a platform to tell my story about the library's importance; and Chamber members have supported me at the library when I've asked for assistance. I always tell new members to join the Ambassadors or another committee, because it's an easy way to meet people and take advantage of the wonderful opportunities the Chamber offers.
