Middle School DC Trip

Middle School had an outstanding day visiting our nation's capital. Animals, museums, space & air, portraits, monuments, plenty of walking, and of course lobbying our elected officials made for a full day. Grades 5/6 had a terrific opportunity to reengage with the work that culminated in the simulated mission to Mars last year at the National Air and Space Museum. They also visited the National Museum of Natural History and some of the national monuments. Grade 7 lobbied for climate change legislation with Congressmen Evans and Meehan, and Senator Toomey, and had a tour of the Capitol. Grade 8 toured the Natural Portrait Gallery, which will be helpful for an upcoming portrait project, and The Folger Shakespeare Library. They had a chance to perform a bit of Romeo and Juliet at The Library. All of middle school visited the National Zoo to top off the day.

Farmer John's Visit

Our youngest friends learned all about farms, food, and where it comes from. Farmer John from Quiver Farms visited nursery school and preschool with Gail the chicken and Knight the rooster. Farmer John talked about his jobs on the farm and how roosters protect the chickens from predators like foxes. We learned about the body parts of the chicken including the comb, spurs, beak, and tail feathers. Over the next two weeks, Forest's Edge will take care of the eggs in the incubator and watch the hatching process next Monday and Tuesday. All Heritage House classes will have a chance to turn the eggs, check the humidity level of the incubator, and take care of the chicks, though they will reside in Forest's Edge and they will be the primary caretakers. It takes a village to raise the chicks.

Zones
Push "Reset"

How do you "reset" your brain and body to be in the green zone? This week, students and teachers returned to school following spring break. In Zones' lessons, classes discussed how to navigate a happy return. Students were excited to share about their family experiences.  W e discussed how our bodies needed to adjust to waking up early, having scheduled eating times, moving from inside in the classroom to outside at recess, being in different size groups, etc. Students shared various examples of tools that they can use to help with their adjustment, such as reviewing the calendar or visual class schedule, spending time "catching up" with a friend, checking in with "go to" teachers, and reminding their brain and body of expected behavior by "pushing reset." Welcome back, green zone friends!
