Meet Aid Worker Kayra Martinez
From Love  Beyond Borders-For Refugees in Need

This Wednesday, February 15 at 8:30 am Kayra Martinez from Love Beyond Borders-For Refugees in Need, will pay a visit to Friends School Haverford to talk about the refugee situation in Greece and to thank our community for its support for refugee families there. Please join us for coffee and conversation about her work at 8:30 am in the community room during our PTO meeting.  Afterwards, Kayra will pay a visit to Teacher Dee's 3/4 classroom, where she will talk with the students who have been Skyping with the kids with whom she works.

Later that evening, you can see and purchase some of the artwork created by Syrian refugee kids at a special event being hosted at the Duffy Arts Center at Malvern Prep from
6:30 pm - 8:00 pm. The address for that event is 418 South Warren Avenue Malvern, PA 19355. All are welcome.

The NED Show

The NED Show visited FSH for a special all school assembly. The NED Show is a character education program with three special messages: Never give up, Encourage others, and Do your best. The student's enjoyed storytelling, audience participation, magic, and some fabulous yo-yo tricks. NED gear is available till the end of the week for their Pay-it-Forward sale which helps fund the next school's assembly. See grades 3/4 to make a purchase. Click here for more photos.

Middle School Music Presentation

Middle school was treated to some live music and a presentation from FMC (Friends Music Camp). FMC is a Quaker-based summer music camp for 10-18 year olds. Students watched a video, heard a few songs from Martha Hyde on clarinet and Brendan Cooney on piano, did some warm-up exercises, sang a few songs, and asked questions. For more information on the FMC summer camp program go to friendsmusiccamp.org

Kindergarten Artists

Kindergarten artists looked at the work of Louise Nevelson. Nevelson created assemblages of various found wood objects... old chairs, headboards, railings, etc. After arranging the pieces, she then painted the whole structure one color. The students enjoyed looking at her work and finding shapes and forms in her art pieces. A pile of various wood pieces awaited each student to explore. Balance was an important part of making their own sculpture. Nice work Kindergarten. Click here for more photos.

Reading During Early Birds

In February, our students are joining together to increase their reading time and celebrating our "Love to Read" campaign. During the Early Bird period, students choose a book to read on their own or with a friend. It is wonderful to see our students add fifteen minutes of reading to their day. Healthy snacks are also provided. If you arrive to school early, grab a book and a banana - and join us.

Pretzel Tuesday Tomorrow!

This pretzel initiative is an opportunity to fundraise for middle school trips, build community, and engage with math skills in meaningful ways. The Carousel Connections crew and middle school math students will sell pretzels during the class snack times on Tuesdays. If you would like your child to receive a freshly baked pretzel, please send a $1 in with them. Please note that we will not have a pre-paid sale due to our focus on the math and money exchange. Thank you for supporting our pretzel sale!

During Zones lessons we continue to share about the power of words, kindness, and empathy with others. This week, we also discussed flexibility and read the books "What You Get" and "The Recess Queen." Students shared about moments when they have been able to demonstrate "superflex mode" tools that they might use when they are in "rock brain" mode. We incorporated Ceili (pictured with 3/4 students above left) into the lesson by sharing that she might have been disappointed (blue zone) because it was raining outside and so her walk needed to be shorter. However, when she joins the classroom and receives love and compliments, she can become more flexible. Our older students practiced reflecting on the statement, "What might happen if I _____?" to demonstrate that they can work through a problem solving process internally by using planning and positive self-talk. Ceili also showed our young friends how to perform a downward dog pose as a relaxing body break.

Students vs Parents/Staff Basketball Game

Both FSH basketball teams got to play a lively game against parents and faculty as an end-of-the-season treat. The upper team beat the parents and staff in the last second by one point in an exciting buzzer-beating moment. The lower team was defeated by parents and faculty, but everyone had great fun and played well. It was a wonderful way to end the season.
