Community Lunch tomorrow
Wednesday, February 22

Community Lunch offers our school community the opportunity to eat together. Meals are held family style for each class, and some upper school students serve and eat with children in Heritage House. Community Lunch was a much loved part of our past school lunch program, and we are excited to bring back the tradition. The meal will be vegetarian friendly and nut-free as well as low dairy. Community lunch is free of charge and made possible by the generous donation of an FSH family.

Lunch menu:
Pasta with marinara sauce (vegetarian with cheese on the side)
Roasted broccoli (vegetarian; gluten and dairy free)
Whole grain focaccia bread
Rice krispy treats

FSH in the News

Kayra Martinez from Love Beyond Borders - For Refugees in Need paid a special visit to grade 3/4 students. Tr. Dee's class has been Skyping with Kayra and Syrian refugee children in a camp located in Greece for months. NBC10 covered the story of this special meeting and the surprise Kayra brought.

Academy of Natural Sciences Visit

Life as we know it is dependent on the building blocks of rocks and minerals. Nursery school and preschool had a visit from an Academy of Natural Sciences instructor. Each student got to hold, smell, and see a variety of rocks and minerals. The children learned about the characteristics of rocks and minerals and how they are used in everyday products. Everyone had a chance to examine the minerals close-up and under the microscope. Examples of mineral based products were shared. It was a rich learning experience for all!  Click here  for more photos.

Zones

How do you show and share love? On Valentine's Day, students highlighted aspects of empathy during Zones lessons. We discussed how being kind to one another can help us stay in the green zone. The Pout Pout Fish is a character that initially is feeling grumpy. He then is able to feel kindness when another fish helps him to change his mindset. At home, "catch" your child showing kindness, ask her how she was a friend today, ask him how kindness was demonstrated in school to him.

Zones lessons this month are also focusing on how there are times when we expect our bodies and minds to feel energy. For example, we feel excited before a holiday, a birthday celebration, or changes in our routines. We also are sharing awareness and mindfulness related to how our brains and bodies need to respond to changes in activities. When we move from PE to a classroom activity, our bodies need to transition or shift from being in motion to settling. How do we prepare our bodies and brains for these shifts? We review calming strategies that include a body hug, knee squeeze, and lazy eight breathing. Mindfulness supports this self-regulation process.

Family Groups

Each Thursday morning, students have an opportunity to join in cross-age blends during family group time. Family groups foster relationships across grades, build community and leadership skills, and create connections across curriculum. This past week, family groups created tissue paper flowers. Children used their imagination and creativity to construct flowers - and they were all unique in design. Flowers were then delivered to our grandfriends at Brandywine Senior Center and brought bright smiles!
