Birdwatching

Preschool is learning about bird behavior and are tracking their observations. On a nature walk to the Haverford College duck pond, they were introduced to the idea of counting, using tally marks. Students looked for birds that were sitting,
walking, flying, or swimming and recorded information on their log sheets. They discovered bird tracks in the snow and saw ducks
and geese on the pond and in the fields. They will continue their observations through the spring.   Click here for photos.
Grades 3/4 Pep Rally

Grades 3/4 were in the Super Bowl spirit on Friday sporting green-colored clothing and Eagles jerseys for a pep rally. They met their goal of 500 "awesomeness" points for expected behaviors and were treated to a celebration of all green foods and sang "Fly Eagles Fly." Way to go Grades 3/4 and way to go Eagles, SUPERBOWL CHAMPIONS! Click here for photos.
Special Guest Author

Author Lisa Graff, a parent of an FSH student, was a special guest in our Forest's Edge nursery school class. She read from her book  It is Not Time for Sleeping.  Lisa is a young adult book author and has also written children's books. Our students gathered for circle time to hear her read her wonderful story and ask questions. Afterwards, they had a chance to write and illustrate their own books. Click here for photos.
FSH Basketball Game

The FSH 5/6 basketball team gave an
all-out effort against Media-Providence Friends. We were defeated 19-28, but really hustled and showed good teamwork. Come root for our 7/8 players at our next home game, Wednesday, February 7 vs. Stratford Friends.

Larks Club: Create Your Own Monster Class

Preschool and kindergarten students in Larks Club have been learning all about monsters. Tr. Julie read stories aloud and then club members drew pictures and created monsters out of play dough, puzzles, and Legos. Their next project was to create their own monster  using various fabric scraps, old ties, and denim. The students learned how to hand sew the eyes and mouth on their creatures. They stuffed their monsters and helped sew the last seam by pressing the peddle of the sewing machine. They enjoyed playing with their final creations and learned that monsters really aren't scary after all.  Click here for photos.

Pot au Feu

Friends School Haverford former principal, Frances Ferris, purchased the stew pot in this photograph (on right) in France during her tour of duty as a nurse in World War I (1914 - 1918). During the 1930s, when Frances was principal, she came to know Priscilla "Pat" Longstreth Roche, an FSH student. Pat describes Frances as "a great maiden lady." Frances used the pot until 1948 when she gave it to Pat as a wedding gift.

In 1960 Pat presented the pot to Miriam Jones Brown when Miriam became principal of Friends School Haverford. Miriam Jones Brown passed the pot on to FSH head of school Katherine Booth in 1975. Katherine Booth Stevens gave the pot to Betty Ann Workman, who became head of school in 1985. Betty Ann Workman left the pot for new head of Friends School Haverford, Marlisa Parker, who gave it to Martha Bryans in 1996.

In 2001 Pat's daughter, Barbara Roche Wille, became the founding head of Northern Virginia Friends School. Martha Bryans gave the pot as a gift to Barbara Roche Wille to celebrate her headship. A decade ago Barbara returned the pot to her mother saying, after all it was meant to be a wedding gift to her.

In July 2010 Pat presented the pot to me, Michael Zimmerman, upon my appointment as head of Friends School Haverford. On the occasion of her 90th birthday, Pat recalled this wonderful story for me. Thank you Pat, and Happy Birthday!
