Marimba on the Airwaves

Tr. Ed and a few Kwaya Marimba members were on WRTI 90.1 FM with DJ J. Michael Harrison this past Friday night. They discussed our Marimba program, shared stories, and played some of our songs that were previously recorded at the last school assembly. A few of the students got to read some of the radio promos, much to their delight. They also promoted our Barnes Foundation performance that took place on Sunday. Click here to listen to the interview. Students were given a tour of the studio and were lucky to catch Diego McLendon's grandfather, a pianist, and some fellow musicians practicing in the studio. Marimba Performance at The Barnes Foundation

Kwaya Marimba gave a stellar performance at The Barnes Foundation this past Sunday for the "First Sunday Music and Dance Talk." The program also featured The Dunya Performing Arts Company and a panel discussion called "A Whole New Grind." They played to a large audience and sounded wonderful. After the show, they had the opportunity to walk through the museum and look at the wonderful artwork. Click here for photos.

Pretzel Tuesday Tomorrow!

This pretzel initiative is an opportunity to fundraise for middle school trips, build community, and engage with math skills in meaningful ways. The Carousel Connections crew and middle school math students will sell pretzels during the class snack times on Tuesdays. If you would like your child to receive a freshly baked pretzel, please send a $1 in with them. Please note that we will not have a pre-paid sale due to our focus on the math and money exchange. Thank you for supporting our pretzel sale!

Zones

This week, a chocolate lab pup, Ceili came to visit classrooms. We discussed the term empathy and feelings when you are a visitor or new to an experience -  just like Ceili must feel on her first day in the classroom. In Heritage House, we read the story Liam Labradoodle Learns Whole Body Listening. We discussed how we use our whole bodies when listening to friends while playing or in the classroom. To build the power of the experience, classrooms shared their own "whole body listening" charts that are used as a reminding tool.

Our friends in grades 1 - 4 shared about experiences of being a bucket "filler" and bucket "dipper." Students gave Ceili compliments. We also reflected on being positive with others and acting with integrity in our school culture of kindness.
