Who Are Our Carousel Friends?
The Friends School Haverford partnership with Carousel Connections brings volunteers to our campus and a wonderful dimension to school community life.
Carousel Connections is an organization that coordinates volunteer opportunities for young adults with developmental disabilities. Our learning specialist, Amy McCann, founded this organization and is its director. Carousel volunteers do service
work in as many as 20 area organizations and businesses including many departments at Haverford College, Ardmore Initiative, Zion Baptist Church, Partyland and other retail
stores on the Main Line, Friends of Linwood Park, MANNA in Philadelphia, and Brandywine Assisted Living, with whom Friends School Haverford also has a partnership.
Our Carousel friends volunteer work at Friends School Haverford includes office work
(e.g. stuffing envelopes), assisting with the weekly pretzel sale, caring for classroom pets, helping in Heritage House at lunch time (e.g. assisting students with juice boxes), baking treats for faculty meetings, and helping with grounds work (e.g. weeding and raking leaves).
Our relationship with Carousel Connections began during the summer of 2015. We have as many as five or six volunteers who regularly spend time on campus. We celebrate
their work with us from time to time in the Weekly Update.
Recently, the question of whether the presence of our Carousel friends represents any sort of safety or security concern was brought to my attention. Please know that all of the Carousel Connections participants, and their supervising mentors, have the same clearances as those required of the school's faculty and staff. Participants are well supervised. Moreover, Amy McCann selects volunteers for our school who are well suited to a school setting and the community work we have to offer.
We are so very proud of the diverse school family we are, and of this aspect of our school's mission. The benefits to all of growing up in a community that includes individuals who are different from one another include: building a strong foundation of tolerance, increasing resilience, developing relationships with others, cultivating effective communication skills, and experiencing joy!

Haverford Friends Meeting First Day School (Sunday School)
Haverford Friends Meeting has a brand new, fun, and revitalized First Day School (Sunday School) program. Haverford Friends Meeting is the Quaker Meeting located on the same campus as Friends School Haverford, and in whose care the school is. Worship begins at 10:30 am on Sundays. Children worship with their families and the wider meeting from 10:30 am -10:45 am. Elizabeth Croce (the First Day School teacher whose picture accompanies this article) then stands to lead the children upstairs to the First Day School classroom. Elizabeth engages students in an exciting program of community building activities, group games, and teachings about Quaker values. All youth from first grade through middle school are invited to join our community. In addition, Haverford Friends Meeting offers a separate childcare service for all children younger than first grade.
We would be delighted to see you on Sundays at Haverford Friends Meeting!
Come to a writers workshop and book signing with author AC Gaughen, Saturday, February 3, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm. Great for middle school students.

This pretzel initiative is an opportunity to fundraise for middle school trips, build community, and engage with math skills in meaningful ways. The Carousel Connections crew and middle school math students will sell pretzels during the class snack times on Fridays. If you would like your child to receive a freshly baked pretzel, please send a $1 in with him/her. Please note that we will not have a pre-paid sale due to our focus on the math and money exchange. Thank you for supporting our pretzel sale!
