First Thursday Coffee
with Head of School,
Michael Zimmerman

Thursday, February 1, 2018 | 8:00 am
Schoolhouse Community Room

Would you like to learn about Friends School Haverford's budget? How much money do we have? On what do we spend our money? What priorities does our budget reflect? How does the school budget process work?

Director of finance and operations, Cheryl Hammond Hopewell will be with us to share information and help us understand. Come with questions and insights, or just come to listen to a conversation about the deployment of Friends School Haverford's financial resources.

We will gather at 8:00 am to enjoy refreshments and each other's company. We will begin the meeting at 8:15 am.

If the topic of this month's coffee is of interest to you but you are unable to attend the meeting, please feel free to contact Nancy Hurley in the office to schedule an appointment to meet with me at a time that is convenient for you.

Regular and forthright discussion, open lines of communication, and the exchange of ideas improve our community. I am grateful for your support. I am always happy to hear from you. I hope to see you there,

Michael

Robins' Nests

On a recent Forest Friday, our FSH Kindergarteners met Dan Larkins, the Haverford College Arboretum Program Coordinator, at the climbing tree. Dan showed the class a robin's nest and taught us how a robin builds its nest with mud and sticks. Our students were challenged to create a robin's nest using natural materials found around the climbing tree. They discovered how difficult it can be to make a nest out of mud and sticks! A robin typically builds a nest within one week. Kindergartners enjoyed collaborating with Dan to make their own nests. We also learned that holes in a tree trunk are called cavities. (We made a connection with the cavities in our teeth.) When a bird creates a nest in the hole it is called a cavity nest. Students had fun placing their completed nests in the tree, hoping a bird might find itself a new home. Click here for photos.
Hurricane Houses

As a project for their Structures and Forces Unit, grade 7 students used their knowledge about internal and external forces to design and build a house out of limited supplies that can withstand a hurricane. Important design areas are the foundation and roof. The house needed to be more than 1,500 sq cm and include two windows and a door. Mr. Ken used a leaf blower to simulate a hurricane to try and blow the houses down, but all students were successful with their houses staying intact. Click here for photos.
Storytelling Festival

Students in grades 3/4 researched fairytales, folktales and fables then wrote their own which they recited for an all-school assembly and also for an evening event for families for the storytelling festival.  Click here for photos.
FSH Basketball Game

The FSH 5/6 basketball team had an exciting game against The French International School. Even though we were defeated 22-20, everyone gave a great effort showing good passes, plays, and defense. Come root for our team at our next home game, Wednesday, January 31 vs. Media-Providence Friends.  Click here for photos.
