A knot is a good symbol of human imperfection. Our hearts get knotted up so compassion can't flow. Our perception gets knotted up so we see enemies instead of brothers or sisters. Our stomach gets knotted up, and in our pain or anger we lash out or run away from those who could help us.

 

Like knots in wood, our imperfections are there under the various ways we paint ourselves. And when the paint fades or peels away, we can feel vulnerable and ashamed.

 

But imperfection is a gift. If we let it, imperfection leads us to compassion for ourselves and others. If we let it, imperfection leads us to God's compassion and mercy.     (read more)
