First Thursday Coffee
with Head of School,
Michael Zimmerman

Thursday, May 4, 2017 |  8:00 am
Schoolhouse Community Room

What is the value of the arts? What is the value of the arts in education? What is your experience of the arts? Is there a meaningful arts educator who shaped who you are today? What role do the arts play in the Friends School Haverford program?

Please join me, music teacher Ed Nardi, and art teacher Amy Kiely on Thursday morning May 4 at 8:00 am. We will share our stories and look forward to hearing your stories too!

This is our last coffee of the year (there will be no First Thursday Coffee in June). Coffees afford an informal opportunity for parents to socialize, share feedback, raise issues, and ask questions. We will gather at 8:00 am to enjoy refreshments and each other's company. We will begin the meeting soon thereafter.

If the topic of this month's coffee is of interest to you but you are unable to attend the meeting, please feel free to contact  Nancy Hurley in the office to schedule an appointment to meet with me at a time that is convenient for you. Regular and forthright discussion, open lines of communication, and the exchange of ideas improve our community. I am grateful for your support. I am always happy to hear from you.

I hope to see you there,

Michael Zimmerman
Head of School

Muddy Fun

As the temperatures changed, preschool began talking about the season of spring and the noticeable changes around them. They noted that in spring there is a lot of rain. Tr. Tuesday read the book, "Mud" by Mary Lyn Ray and the class discussed how mud is made. When asked if they ever walked in mud in their bare feet, preschoolers were curious to try it. They agreed to do so on the next warm day. On Friday they had their chance and enjoyed dipping their feet in the mud for a wonderful sensory experience. Some reactions were "it feels good," "it's cold," and "it feels squishy."

Life Cycle of a Plant

Forest's Edge nursery school has been studying the life cycle and parts of a plant. Before taking a nature hike to find matching plants in the gardens, students planted Zinnia seeds in pots they decorated. They will watch them grow into beautiful flowers and talk about their observations during nature circle time.
