Simple Machines

Preschool has been learning about simple machines and how they help make work easier. Inclined planes, pulleys, and tools were just some of the subjects touched upon. They each took a ride in a basket with wheels down a ramp to show how an incline plane works and how wheels make the ride faster. The students had a chance to go on an elevator ride with Mr. Ken which demonstrated a pulley system. Back in the classroom, each student had a chance to pull a bucket of water up and down on a doorway on a pulley system. They discovered that the pulley system made that exercise easier than lifting the bucket without assistance.

Yard Work with a Blending of Friends!

Students and our Carousel Connections crew worked together to beautify the flower beds before the Spring Fair. Along the way, we found flower blossoms, mint and other herbs, a garter snake, smiles, and lots of budding friendships. We will return to this work on the next sunny day at FSH!

Kindergarten Field Trip

After a year-long study of the trees and plants at Haverford College, the first arboretum in America, our kindergarten class took an exciting bus ride to The Tyler Arboretum. Students learned about many types of plants and trees, same new and some familiar, on their walking tour. They compared the bark and origins of the trees and noted the characteristics of each. At the pond, they were excited to spot tadpoles, frogs, turtles, and birds up close. They enjoyed a picnic, rolling hills, and storybook houses, and participated in dramatic play at the treehouses, which reminded them of the Magic Treehouse series they've been reading in class.

Marimba Performance
at The Porch at
30th Street Station

Kwaya Marimba played at The Porch at 30th Street Station for commuters, students, local residents, and area workers. The Porch is one of Philadelphia's premier public spaces located in the University City District. The performance was part of the "PECO Powers Performances at The Porch" series which runs from May through September. Our 7th and 8th graders were thrilled to help kick off their season and introduce the audience to sounds of the marimba.
