Faculty/Parent vs Softball Team Game

The 90-degree heat didn't stop the friendly competition at Preston Field for the annual faculty/parents vs students softball game. Enthusiasm and team spirit ran deep on both sides but the parents and faculty pulled ahead for a win over the students.

Merion Meeting
History Festival

Our middle school students were having fun at the Merion Meeting History Festival manning the game booth. They stepped back into the 1850s at this free event. There were horse and carriage rides, a blacksmith demonstration, re-enactors, a quilt turning, period crafts and delicious food.

Grade 1 practiced Tinikling in gym class. Tinikling is a traditional Philippine folk dance that involves two people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance. This dance is an aerobic exercise that helps with coordination, foot speed, and rhythm. Each student had an opportunity to take a turn and learn this fun dance.

Social Justice in Action

Our 8th-grade class presented their semester-long thesis projects to a room of classmates and teachers. Each student selected, researched, and wrote about a social justice topic that meant something to them. Topics included Islamophobia, gender inequality, global warming, raising the minimum wage, and sexual assault on college campuses. Tr. Michael and Dr. Angela Putman, Assistant Professor at Penn State Brandywine, asked questions and gave critiques after each presentation.

Academy of Natural Science Visit

Heritage House has been studying habitats. They got to meet and learn about the life of Odin, an eastern screech-owl; Jaba, a spiny-tailed lizard; and Violet, a nine-banded armadillo from The Academy of Natural Sciences. Students learned that Oden is nocturnal and can turn his head 270 degrees; Jaba, who measures about 12" long, can dig a 6' hole with his tail to protect himself; and Violet is generally an insectivore eating mainly ants, termites, and worms and can jump straight up in the air to 4' when frightened! Everyone had a chance to pet the lizard and armadillo and since the owl doesn't like contact, there was an owl feather they could touch instead.

Talent Show

Singing, dancing, and magic were just some of the wonderful acts at this year's Talent Show. There were a few solos on guitar and piano as well as solo and duo dance performances. Forest's Edge, preschool, and grades 3/4 each entertained the audience with a group class performance. The show was emceed by 8th graders, Charlotte Mumma, Maddie Lippa, and Imran Loudini. It was a terrific show by a talented bunch of students!
