Notes from the New Chair: Jon Althoff

Good morning, Dakota County Regional Chamber!

Following up on Mark Lofthus' Board Chair farewell note last week, this is my "hello" to you on my first official day as your new 2017/18 Board Chair.

Mark, Board, and staff turn over a very strong Chamber into this new Chamber year. As Mark related, the Chamber is growing, has strong programming underway and we are financially strong.

Your Board is focused on four initiatives for the coming months:
  1. Secure, Welcome and Train an Effective, Vibrant President
  2. Strong, High Functioning Committees
  3. Support of Every Event by Board Members
  4. Welcome to the Vikings
We are finishing the celebration of our 60th year and we are all part of a well-oiled machine. I have been trained over the year as Chair of the Communications Committee and served on the Nomination, President Selection and Executive Committees. Similarly, we know who will follow me as Chair next October, Lin Nelson of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota. There is planned continuity in your Chamber leadership.

Last, I want to add (in addition to thanks to Mark, staff and many volunteers for a year well served) a special thank you to Vicki Stute. Her leadership in just under five years in supporting the DCR Chamber in vision, growth and prestige is incalculable. We are indeed fortunate that she will remain an advocate in the Chamber world.  Vicki has set a high bar. We are ready, with everyone's help, to meet that challenge.

Happy October! Time to roll up our sleeves!
Committed to Business... for YOU.

Local Government Needs to Butt Out of Wage and Sick Leave Mandates
By Doug Loon

Doug Loon, president of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, recently published an article in the Star Tribune about local government involvement in private-sector employee benefits. The article states that, " The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce wants a thriving economy in which employers compete to attract and retain employees by offering competitive wages and benefits. But we oppose a patchwork of mandates enacted by local governments."

Member Spotlight: The Good Neighbor

John Curlee, President of Curlee State Farm Agency
My team and I work with individuals, families and businesses to protect them from the bad things that can happen in life so they can invest in the good things. We serve our clients with insurance and State Farm Bank Products. I started as a "scratch" agent in 1984. It has been gratifying to build relationships with clients and leaders in the community as the "Good Neighbor Agent" in Eagan.  I have been a Chamber member since I started in business. The Chamber keeps me connected with other business and community leaders.
