VOLUNTEERS - If you would rather show your support by volunteering your time before, during or after the Race or Pumpkin Day, we would love to have your help!

SPONSORS - It's not too late to contribute! Help us reach our goal of $20,000!   This Spring, when financial aid applications come in, your donation will change a student's life for the better. Your impact will be immediate and significant to our school community - and it's tax deductible!

We are adding donor logos to the Race page daily, designing the new Race Banner and Tees, and we will wait until the last second to print so that as many sponsors are represented as possible. And, if your submission comes in late, we will advertise for you AGAIN at our Spring event as well!

Click here to become a Sponsor or donate.

PUMPKIN DAY - We are excited that Pumpkin Day is following Footsteps for Friends so that families have a full morning of fun on the beautiful FSH campus. Please feel free to invite friends and family to this event, which also supports the Quaker education. The suggested donation for Pumpkin Day is $5 per person or $20 per family, however, admission is free to sponsors and Footsteps participants. We are excited to share the joy of this beloved FSH tradition with all of you!

October Monthly PTO Meeting

Schoolhouse Community Room
Halloween Parade

Tuesday, October 31
8:00 am - 8:30 am - Coffee in the Gym
8:30 am - Costume Parade on the Turf Field

For parents of FSH goblins, storybook characters, and other magical trick-or-treaters, please join us on Tuesday, October 31 for a treat and a cup of coffee in the gym while the children prepare for the Halloween Parade. Drop your goblin off in class and join us in the gym from 8:00 am - 8:30 am.

The Halloween Parade begins at 8:30 am, weather permitting, outside on the turf field. If it rains, festivities will be moved into the gym.

Please Note:  Children may wear child-inspired or store-bought costumes to school for the all-school Halloween Parade. Simplicity is the key, especially for the younger children. Children need to have regular clothes to wear for the remainder of the day. Scary masks are not permitted out of consideration for our younger students. In keeping with our Quaker philosophy, costumes may not include camouflage, weapons, or weapon-like accessories.

Penn Museum

Grades 5/6 traveled by train to the Penn Museum to further their study of West Africa. They were given a guided tour of the museum's extensive Imagine Africa exhibit. Students were able to see artifacts from the Kingdom of Ghana, like gold weights used in the salt trade and learned about the proverbs they represent. They went to a workshop on the relationship between Cuban and West African rhythms. Finally, it was time to explore artifacts from China, Japan, the Middle East, and Egypt. Click here for photos.

Carousel Connections

Carousel Connections is a program for young adults with disabilities that builds independence and develops relationships within the community. Supportive mentors coach participants as they gain skills to live, work, and travel. Along the way, they build relationships, share their talents and contributions, and gain employment skills that may be used in the future.  The summer residential portion of the program was launched in 2012 by FSH faculty members, Amy and Chris McCann. During the summer season, participants reside on the campus of Haverford College; just a few steps away from FSH. This fall, we are excited to welcome a Carousel crew into our community as they help with pet care, faculty appreciation by baking delicious treats for meetings, library assistance, office work, tidying shared spaces, gardening, and engaging with Heritage House friends during the lunch period. The Carousel crew also collaborates with our middle school students for the Friday pretzel sale and helps bridge our partnership to Brandywine Senior Center. If you see a crew member at school (or in the neighborhood), be ready to share a smile!

Visit Brandywine

Preschool friends bring such joy! On Tuesday, members of the Preschool class visited grandfriends at Brandywine Senior Center for drawing, singing, and sharing conversation about fall festivities. Grandfriends were excited to learn all about our upcoming Halloween costumes and to hear about our adventures. It is amazing to see the relationships between our children and Brandywine residents develop. We are looking forward to our next visit!

Zones Corner

This week, Kipper, the friendly pup, joined Heritage House classrooms to share about expected behavior and introduce himself. We discussed the importance of taking interest in others and sharing about ourselves so that everybody is comfortable. We are great bucket fillers!

First graders focused on positive self talk and how this can impact our behavior with others. We also learned the idiom "up in the air" and reflected on how we can practice having our brains be flexible.

Third and fourth graders are engaging dog trainers! Using cooperative techniques, students learned a training routine with Kipper to be shared with Brandywine residents next week. This takes team work and an understanding of "reading the room" with peers and the dogs. Meg Boscov, our dog trainer, discussed the importance of understanding a dog's body language and feelings. Dog training involves science, reward, friendship, and play. Stay tuned for photos of our Dog Daze show next week!

Thousands of parents take this survey and your comments are shared on Hipster Henry's website. The results help parents find the right school for their family.

The survey will only be open for the month of October so take the survey today and share the good news about our school.

Please note that the Costa Rica Caminata has been postponed. Check back soon for a new date.

Haverford Meeting for Worship

Haverford Meeting, next door to the school, would like you all to know that families are always welcome to attend Meeting for Worship on Sundays. We offer an hour of quiet reflection and community open to everyone. Our members and attenders come from a variety of religious traditions and welcome the time together to share our thoughts. The Meeting has child care every Sunday - for babies and toddlers upstairs from 10:30 am - 11:30 am. For our school-age children we have a new First-Day (Sunday School) program. Usually those older children go into meeting with their parents or caregivers for 15 minutes (same as at school) and then upstairs with Teacher Elizabeth for fun and learning. We don't have a creed to teach, just a child-centered community for all with values and informal lessons on men and women of courage. We also learn from the children what they are interested in and what they would like to share. Then we have coffee, tea, snacks and fellowship afterwards.

Please join us any Sunday you can. For more details, call Kate deRiel at 610-446-8383. Thank you!
