Uniform State Labor Standards Passes Senate; Next Step is Compromise

Last week the Senate passed the Uniform State Labor Standards Act on a 35-31 vote. A special shout-out to Senator Dan Hall (District 56 within Dakota County) for supporting this important legislation.

This priority issue of your Chamber passed the House earlier this session. Due to minor differences in the language of the bills, the House and Senate will appoint conferees to negotiate differences and agree on final language to be sent back to each chamber for a final vote. From there, the bill will go to the Governor's desk for signature.

Governor Dayton, at a press conference, mentioned that he would not take a formal position on whether to sign or veto the Uniform State Labor Standards Act. We hope this is an indication that Governor Dayton may be open to some type of compromise on the legislation. In the coming weeks, we will be asking you - our members - to contact the Governor's office to urge his signature to the bill. Stay tuned for further information.

Join us on Monday, May 8 for Good Day Dakota County, your Chamber's monthly membership meeting. Our guests speakers include Bill Blazar from the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and Maura Donovan, University of Minnesota Economic Development Director, who will discuss the contributions of immigrants to the development and growth of Minnesota's economy, including as workers, entrepreneurs, consumers and a bridge to the world economy.  They'll make the case that immigrant workers and entrepreneurs are more important than ever to the current and future success of our state's economy, concluding with suggestions on how to reform our current immigration system. One of the many things Dakota Scott WorkForce Center staff do is connect people with opportunities to improve skills. Staff are "honest brokers" and thus are focused on connecting job seekers with the right fit and schools for their education needs. Here is an upcoming professional development opportunity for your workers: free Microsoft Word training. Several sessions are available in April and May.

Member Spotlight: The Value of Making Connections

Jake Sedlacek, Xcel Energy
I love living and working in Dakota County. As a community relations manager with Xcel Energy, I serve as a resource for our electric and gas customers, as well as for our city and business leaders. I've been at this for 4 years now, and it seems that every day in the energy industry provides new learning opportunities. Prior to working with Xcel Energy, I worked in local government, and always supported the notion of local companies connecting and growing together.

I participate in the Chamber because I have seen firsthand the value of local businesses making connections. My favorite event is Coffee Break - it's a great way to start the work day, touching base with community leaders, and sharing/hearing about exciting developments in the business community. I've also enjoyed being a part of the Business Excellence Awards Committee for the past two years - we have a lot to celebrate, maybe one night a year isn't enough! The Chamber provides a wealth of opportunities for me to represent my company, and build relationships with our customers. I look forward to meeting you at an upcoming event!
