Are you feeling ready for the day? Friends School Haverford is always ready to share more about Zones. This week, we focused on building our understanding of feelings that match each zone and how we might move from one feeling to another over the course of a day. Our Heritage House classes enjoyed the story,
Sometimes I'm Bombaloo, and created faces of how the character was feeling. We are looking forward to displaying these near our class tool boxes. We also previewed how it will feel when Kipper, the friendly pup, joins us next week for lessons. We practiced helping Kipper feel comfortable by engaging with an imaginary dog.
Our older students discussed Zones lingo and the complexity of emotions. We brainstormed words for our Zones word wall in the Learning Zone classroom.
Ask your child to share about their Zones experience!
Grades 5 and 6 are exploring the role food plays in culture in History Class. As part of their study of West Africa, students were treated to lunch at Kilimandjaro, a West African restaurant in Philadelphia. Among the food students were able to sample were fried plantains, chicken and fish with African spices, and hibiscus juice. It was an educational trip where new tastes were discovered.
Yum! Click here for photos.
Art with Tr. Amy
Forest's Edge students practiced process art with Tr. Amy during art class. Process art is about the experience the children have while they're creating art. It helps with sensory exploration,
fine and gross motor skills,
and coordination. The children experimented with watercolor, pastels, markers, and crayons. This was a group project to teach how to work together. The artwork will be used as a background for the quote "everyday is a journey filled with new things to discover" that will be applied later on.

School Calendars Are Here
In response to last year's request for a paper calendar, we've created a beautiful FSH calendar with photos, information, and important dates for the 2017-2018 school year. Each calendar is $15 and will benefit the PTO. It's perfect not only for your family, but for grandparents, caregivers, and your favorite teachers and staff as well. Please support the FSH PTO and this wonderful project! The attached form can be returned with payment to the Main Office or to your child's teacher.
to download form. Questions? Please contact

Pretzel Sale Starts Next Week
Carousel Connections will provide pretzels this Friday as a taste test. We will then start the pretzel sale next week. This pretzel initiative is an opportunity to fundraise for middle school trips, build community, and engage with math skills in meaningful ways. The Carousel Connections crew and middle school math students will sell pretzels during the class snack times on Tuesdays. If you would like your child to receive a freshly baked pretzel, please send a $1 in with them. Please note that we will not have a pre-paid sale due to our focus on the math and money exchange. Thank you for supporting our pretzel sale!
A Friendly Reminder From
Your Friends at Drop-off
The speed limit on campus is 5 mph.
If you're running late, we promise that your child will be quickly caught up on the few minutes missed. Please adhere to the speed limit for everyone's safety.
Please pull your car up as far as possible for each building.
We'd like to unload two or three cars at a time.
Please pull as close to the curb as possible.
It is a big jump from an SUV to the ground for our smallest students and some try to jump from the car to the curb, which can be dangerous.
If you arrive before 8 am, please remain in your car. We'll be there to help your child out by 8 am.
If you can't wait, please park in the shed area and walk your child to the Early Bird area and sign them in.
Please do not leave your car parked in the drop off area and walk your child in.
Please have your Friends School Haverford child seated in the back seat on the passenger side.
Exiting a car on the driver's side puts the student and the helper at risk.
Please do not get out of your car at drop-off.
We'll help your child and their school bag out of the car. Please be sure to get that extra goodbye hug at home.
If your child is resisting, please pull your car around to the shed to park.
You can then help your child over to the building door.
Thank you for helping to keep the morning transition running safely and smoothly!
Calling All Volunteers
Please show your support by running, walking, volunteering, donating, or sponsoring. The race itself includes a large portion of the gorgeous Haverford College Nature Trail, which is happily quite flat! This year, Footsteps for Friends combines forces with Pumpkin Day, a popular Friends School tradition, involving games, races, scarecrow making, pumpkin painting, fall treats and hot apple cider. From morning until noon, join us for a family (and pet) friendly celebration of Fall, friendship and Friends School Haverford. Join us after the race for the awards ceremony and stick around to enjoy the festivities of Pumpkin Day! It will surely be a wonderful event!
To Register for the 5K Race for 1 Mile Walk/Fun Run, visit our Race Page:
You can make yourself a fundraiser during registration so that friends and family can sponsor you directly.
Another way to participate is by helping us collect donations and sponsorships from local businesses. This will go toward your fundraising total. Please click here for a sponsorship form. If you have a business or know of businesses who would be interested in this type of advertising/sponsorship opportunity, please contact me directly. All donations are tax deductible.
If you are interested in volunteering, we are in need of help on race day to assist with multiple areas and will need help with Pumpkin Day as well. Thank you for your time!
