4th Annual Chamber of Commerce Golf Classic

The Chamber's Annual Golf Tournament is just around the corner! We're trying to come up with fun and memorable ideas to make this outing more than just about Golf!

Citizen of the Year Nominations Sought
Annually, Chamber Members recognize a Volunteer/Citizen of the Year Award. The award is presented during the Annual Chamber Dinner and is given to an individual who consistently demonstrates their commitment to this community through volunteerism, support of the advancement of our business community and leadership. The Board is now accepting nominations and a winner will be determined based on the above mentioned criteria. Please

, to the Chamber Office no later than Friday, October 19th. No nominations will accepted past that.

SEPTEMBER BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
OSAWATOMIE PUBLIC LIBRARY
A library has served the community of
Osawatomie since 1889, and though the locations have changed – the mission to serve the community has remained the same.
As the needs of their patrons have evolved over the last 129 years, so too have the library’s services to meet those needs. Where once the library was primarily known for offering books and magazines, their patrons can now enjoy DVD’s, music, computers, history, programs and classes in addition to a huge variety of books in every genre.
In 2006, the Library Board created a vision to expand and enhance the existing library building to meet its changing role in Osawatomie. After creating an overall plan for what they wanted to see happen, the Board hired Elizabeth Trigg as the new Library Director to make that vision a reality. Plans were drawn up, contracts signed and a
Community Development Block Grant Program was
obtained.
Finally, in the summer of 2009, construction began on Phase 1 of the Library renovation. At this time, the Library was made ADA compliant including the installation of an elevator. This gave the library access to a once unusable basement, presenting them with an additional 3,600 square feet to work with. After completion, the Board immediately began plans and fundraising efforts to implement Phase 2, which would further increase the square footage of the library .
In June of 2016, the library was remembered in the will of former Osawatomie resident Franchelle Maxine Cliff. Ms. Cliff left a Memorial that allowed the library to invest in its current remodel. Thanks to her wonderful donation, the library was able to update the lights and electrical system and was also able to install a new alarm system. They have rearranged the books, painted rooms, created a Kansas Room and a small meeting room and have moved all of the children’s books to the lower level to allow for a more self- contained youth department.
Through the effort of many, Library services now include a fully automated on-line catalog, after school programs, summer reading programs, a video-conversion station (upcoming), 30,000 books, a microfiche machine, a 3-D Printer, educational and crafting classes, community partnerships and other opportunities that benefit their patrons.
The Library Staff includes Tanya Ashely (interlibrary loan), Tammy Lyons (social media consultant), Jan Lindsey (Circulation), Shay Hanysak (Children’s Programing), Amanda Murphy (Adult Programing) and Director Elizabeth Trigg. They look forward to seeing you and will continue to make Osawatomie the wonderful place that we all love and enjoy!

The Osawatomie Public Library will be having a Ribbon Cutting and hosting a coffee at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 11th at their facility (527 Brown Avenue). Please show your support by attending this coffee. This is a great way to get to know their phenomenal staff and a great way to visit with other businesses! Osawatomie Freedom Festival

Two days of fun and history including frontier artisan demonstrations, special tours of the Adair Cabin with Mary Buster (great, great granddaughter of Florella Brown Adair who was the half- sister of John Brown). Family fun activities are planned for all along with displays and demonstrations the whole family will enjoy! Be sure to check out the Civil War Scenario, the Vintage Baseball Game, the Wild West Gunfight, the Several Bands that will be playing and of course the Battle of Osawatomie reenactment. Art in the Park

Art in the Park will be held outdoors (with the exception of paintings and sketched work which will be displayed indoors at Memorial Hall) and will feature individually created art and crafts, live music, a Story Teller, The Osawatomie Theatre Company, Short Scenarios and other Arts Activities. Suicide The Ripple Effect Documentary

Suicide: The Ripple Effect
is a feature length documentary film and movement focusing on the devastating effects of suicide and the tremendous positive ripple effects of advocacy, inspiration and hope that are helping millions to heal & stay alive. The film highlights the journey of Kevin Hines, who at age 19, attempted to take his life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. Today Kevin is a world-renowned mental health advocate, motivational speaker and author who travels the globe spreading a message of hope, recovery and wellness. Following the presentation of the film, Elizabeth Layton Center will host an opportunity for questions and discussion. Troop 106 Annual Spaghetti Feed

Come and enjoy all you can eat spaghetti, salad, garlic bread and 1 dessert (for $1.00 more you can enjoy an extra dessert). Tickets are $6.00 for adults, $4.00 for ages 3-12 and 2 & under eat free. They do have to go containers if you would like to just grab a plate and go. Lemonade, water and tea will also be available to drink. You may purchase tickets at the door or from any of the Boy Scouts in the troop. All the money raised helps the Boys pay for their summer camp. They are also hoping to go on a high adventure camp during the summer of 2019 to New Mexico.
