Dear Families,

It was a beautiful week in Catholic education!

Every day we focus on Christ as our Lord, friend, and an active part of our lives. We begin each day with Morning Prayer as a whole school through BNN (Blues News Network). Each Wednesday we celebrate the Mass together. While the highlight of the Mass is the Eucharist, this week the Fruits of the Spirit were shared with us through the readings, Fr. Tom's homily, and Mrs. Block's classroom reflection.  As a reminder of those gifts the beautiful tree visual the third graders created is on display in the multi-purpose room. I encourage you to discuss these gifts at home and what they mean to each member of your family.

Mrs. Vochoska's class prepared our Reconciliation Service on Thursday for our third through eighth grade classes.  As a class, they guided us through an examination of conscience, providing us time to reflect on our lives.  Each child had an opportunity to receive the sacrament of reconciliation. After reconciliation, the fourth graders gave  us each a beautiful crocheted cross in remembrance of God's forgiveness.

I often hear students comment:
"Remember, we are family in Christ Jesus."
"All of us our God's children."

I see children forgiving one another as Christ taught us to.  I see children receiving forgiveness and being welcomed back into the group activity as if nothing has happened.  I see children's faces light up when their names are read in the petitions.

We are so blessed to be able to use our faith in our day to day life at St. Michael. On behalf of all the staff at St. Michael, thank you for allowing us to share the love of Jesus with your children.

Blessings,

Laurie Maxwell

spanishSpanish at St. Mike's
It's not too late to sign-up!

The Fall/Winter session for kindergarten through fifth grade begins next Monday, October 17. Our kids are at a perfect age for learning a foreign language and pick it up very quickly. The program makes learning fun and easy.

With the Hispanic population increasing in our country, learning Spanish will create a great bridge for communicating with our neighbors. Many other countries require their students to learn at least one foreign language in elementary school so this helps keep us competitive. As an added bonus, your child will be able to recognize words or conversations when you travel to a Spanish speaking country like Mexico, Spain or Cuba. It also increases Cultural Sensitivity and makes a child aware of how cultures can vary from one country to another.

There is usually one sheet of homework each week to help reinforce what the student learned in class. It can take 10-30 minutes to do, depending on how much time your family wants to invest in learning the language. It is a great way for parents to get some exposure with learning Spanish too.

If you have any questions about what it is like to have a student taking the class, please contact Sandy with Futura Adventures at [email protected]. You can register at futuraadventures.com.
veteransVeteran's Day

Veteran's Day is a special day at St. Michael. We hope all parents can join us for an assembly on Thursday, November 10 at 8:00 a.m. in the school gym.

Red forms and white stars were sent home with students this week. We would love to name and honor the Veteran's in your families. And, if possible, display some memorabilia.

The white star can be returned with your Veteran's name, branch of service, and dates of service. Your students can decorate them how ever they would like! The stars will be hung in the hallway and gym.
diaperDiaper Drive for Shakopee Community Assistance

October is Respect for Life month.  We have an outstanding opportunity to serve. Shakopee Community Assistance (SCA) is a non-profit organization located in the Shakopee St. Mark's church cafeteria.  It is committed to meet the needs of clothing, nutrition, and hygiene for children birth thru five for families of limited resources.  They are currently in need of diapers of all sizes but mostly larger sizes 4-6.  Please drop off a box of diapers to assist their growing need.  Other baby items are welcome.  As Mother Teresa once said, "Not all of us can do great things.  But we can do small things with great love."  Any questions, please contact Michelle Gillette-Lacko at [email protected] or 952-440-4970.
