From the Pastor

Here's a story from our friend, Marion Aldridge:

A little boy was overheard talking to himself as he strutted through the backyard, wearing his baseball cap and toting a ball and bat: "I'm the greatest hitter in the world," he announced.
Then, he tossed the ball into the air, swung at it, and missed. "Strike One!" he yelled.

Undaunted, he picked up the ball and said again, "I'm the greatest hitter in the world!"
He tossed the ball into the air. When it came down he swung again and missed. "Strike Two!" he cried.

The boy then paused a moment to examine his bat and ball carefully. He spit on his hands and rubbed them toge
ther. He straightened his cap and said once more, "I'm the greatest hitter in the world!"

Again he tossed the ball up in the air and swung at it. He missed.

"Strike Three!" "Wow!" he exclaimed. "I'm the greatest pitcher in the world.

Great attitude, huh? I don't think the lesson needs explaining at all. Just wanted to share it with you.

Hope to see you Sunday as we remember the Sabbath and keep it holy together.  Bob

FALL 2015
SoFA's fall semester begins  Sunday, August 23. We are enrolling now for lessons and classes.

AUDITIONS
Auditions for our fall youth musical "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" will be held August 29-30.

Auditions for our spring community musical "The Music Man" will be held October 15 & 17.  Consider auditioning yourself, and bring a friend!  Both productions will be great fun.

SoFA Teacher Feature:  Justin Hoffenberg
Originally from Northern Illinois, Justin Hoffenberg grew up in a musical household, he attended many concerts as a child and was drawn towards music.  At 10 years old Justin joined his 5th grade orchestra, where he played the violin for one year before beginning Suzuki lessons, which he pursued until graduating high school. After attending the Rockygrass festival in Lyons, CO, Justin never looked back.  He played in bluegrass bands from the time that he was 13; professionally since he was 15 years old. While a senior in high school, Justin helped form Long Road Home, the bluegrass band with which he is still playing full time. When not with Long Road Home, you can find him playing with a variety of projects, across a variety of genres. He's been known to appear with his Rock and Roll band, The Bimarinal, and even at times as a guest eTone on the eTown radio show (where he appeared with such acts as the Indigo Girls, Tim O'Brien, Big Al Anderson and the North Mississippi All Stars).

Save the Bees!

Please consider supporting our "GoFundMe" campaign for bee hive rescue and removal from our upstairs classroom!

Please share the information below with people you know who might be interested:  http://www.gofundme.com/pinestreethive.

Pine Street Church in downtown Boulder is home not only to a warm community of faith but also a number of community arts, non-profit, and 12 Step groups that use the facility. We love to share our space and are dedicated to enriching our community not only with what happens in our building on Sunday mornings, but also through diverse activities throughout the week.

Our building also happens to be home to one community we unfortunately are not able to serve: a hive of honeybees! We have recently discovered a hive above one of our music classrooms that is estimated to have 150,000-200,000 bees, and gallons upon gallons of honey within.

Because we are committed to making our church space safe, it is necessary for us to remove and rescue the hive to a new home so that the singers, actors, community and church members who use the room beneath the hive are not in danger of being stung and the historic building is not subjected to honey dripping through its walls. How do we rescue these bees though?

...That's where you come in!

The cost of bee removal and room repair to move the bees through the ceiling of our music classroom and to a local hive is $2500. Any funds raised beyond this amount will be used for church and preschool gardening and environment education projects, through which we maintain our Bee Safe Boulder commitment.

Understanding Jesus: His Culture and Context Theme Scripture: Jesus taught them, saying "You have heard it said to men of old... but I say to you..." (Matt. 5)

Dr. David May, Professor of New Testament at Central Baptist Theological Seminary, will lead a study of the cultural context of Jesus' teaching. Both the Roman and the Jewish cultures in first century Palestine were very different from the culture in which we live. Dr. May will provide insights into the societal norms in Jesus' day, and help retreat participants interpret Jesus' teaching in light of cultural traditions.

Rev. Andrew Daugherty, Executive Minister at Calvary Baptist Church, and Dr. Michael McBride, longtime church musician, music teacher, and educator, will lead our worship and music. The retreat starts at 4 p.m. on Tuesday and concludes with lunch on Thursday. Besides worship and content sessions, there will be time to socialize, relax, and walk the beautiful, peaceful grounds.

SoulJourners Retreat is sponsored by ABCRM.  Click here for more details & registration information.Registration deadline is August 25 (Aug. 1 for $25 early bird discount). Don't miss this opportunity!
