Adding Fertilizer -

Don't worry about tomorrow. Instead today tell someone you love them; ask someone to forgive you, say I am sorry and above all say thank you. For in those simple acts, you will find wisdom.

                                         Br. James Koester

An amazing thing happened to me this summer I would like to share with you. After Camp Able week a small group of staff took four campers to Disney World. We went with a little trepidation realizing the Magic Kingdom is not the same sanctuary as the one we share and call home, St. Mark's. In my over thirty years of participation in camps for people with diverse abilities, I've only done one big off campus adventure before. In 1984 we loaded up the campers for a trip to the zoo, picnic and a minor league baseball game. I remember enjoying the zoo and picnic but never saw any of the game as I was searching for a camper who decided he wanted to go home and walked to the bus station.  Thirty years later the thought of not knowing where he was still makes me uneasy.

Saturday morning we headed out together pairing every one up in our matching shirts with the mantra "stay with your buddy." In line for the first ride pairs were separating when Dakota a sixteen year old fellow Saints' fan with Downs Syndrome slipped his hand in mine picking me as his buddy. Much to the dismay of the other staff that wanted to ride with Dakota, he picked me, the whole magical day.

Sitting in my office, running meetings, participating as a public figure in the community, directing Camp Able, all these things that characterize my ministry don't tell the story of why I felt called to ordination to the priesthood, and why I feel called to ministry on the margins. The intimacy of relationships defined as two children of God in communion with each other is what compels my soul. And yet external responsibilities can sometimes overwhelm the very taproot of my spiritual sustenance.

Thank you Dakota for giving me one of the most joyous days of my life, and for reminding me what's important.

In an effort to continue to feed, that which has fed me in so many ways, I need your help. From now until Christmas I would like to do lunch. I have given Nan my schedule for you to call and set up a lunch date. Please. I will come to your home; meet you at a restaurant, place of business, school or leisure. I will meet you one on one or with others. I hope you will call so we can break bread together.

                                                            I love you,

Kyle

Treasurer's Report - Liz Bryan

We are nearing the end of summer and a new "season" is rapidly approaching. As we begin the 4th quarter of the year, I think this is a good time to give a report of how we are doing financially with the Operating Budget.

At the end of August, the actual revenue was $364,250 against an expense was $354,224. This leaves us with an Operating Budget balance of $10,296. However, this is not a strong position to be in as you will see in the following paragraphs.

Monthly expenses are fairly static. Monthly revenues are not. History has shown that it is important to build up strong revenue prior to the summer months when the revenue is less. The revenue budget is established taking this into account. Even with that, the actual year-to-date revenue is below the budget by $24,986.

If we do not increase our monthly revenue, the current $10,296 balance will quickly go into the negative column as our projected monthly expenses exceed our projected monthly revenue. If we are unable to increase the operating budget revenue, we could face a negative balance of between $15,000 - $20,000 at year-end. So, please take this as a gentle reminder to review your commitment to St. Mark's and help us achieve the revenue necessary to meet the expense budget that was presented in the Annual Report of January, 2014.

Rev. Sue's Tendril: A Priesthood Shaped by Mutual Ministry - Serving a "Small"  Church (Part 2 of a 3-Part Series Commemorating the 15th Anniversary of My Ordination)

Note: My fellow parishioners, I know these write-ups are longer than usual. However, so many of you have asked me about my background as a priest that many of your questions will be answered by reading this.

It was December 1981 and Bill and I had traveled 30 miles to the small rural community of Prosser, Washington (WA). We were looking to find a vehicle, and a dealership in Prosser was known for its lower prices in comparison to the dealerships in the Tri-Cities (Richland, Kennewick, Pasco, WA) where we resided and worked. Just next to the car dealership in Prosser we noticed St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. It was a "mission" church reflecting the basic design of nearly half the ~40 churches in the Diocese of Spokane. The Sanctuary, with a capacity for ~75 people, sits atop a basement, used as the Parish Hall.

Bill and I had visited all the Episcopal churches in the Tri-Cities, and this former Presbyterian found all of them to be less than welcoming and the liturgy to be confusing. Thus, for the last 5 years we had resorted to attending a mega-sized community church in the Tri-Cities. However, I knew that Bill, a cradle Episcopalian, longed to return to his roots. In addition, my mother-in-law, a very devout Episcopalian, longed for us to do so, as well. I've always wondered if it was her prayers that led us to take that trip to Prosser. Despite my reservations, we made a commitment to visit St. Matthew's the next Sunday. We did, and as the saying goes, "the rest is history".

After our first visit to St. Matthew's, Bill and I knew we had found our church home. We found that St. Matthew's had been revitalized over the last 3 years under the leadership of a new priest, Father Gary, and regular attendance had increased from ~15 members a Sunday to ~50 members. However, despite the enthusiasm of Father Gary and his flock, the church was always struggling financially and needed to be supplemented with funding from the Diocese. After Father Gary accepted another call, St. Matthew's was able to support a second full-time, bi-lingual priest, Father Bob, for ~5 years using supplemental, diocesan Hispanic Ministry funding. However, the funding struggle continued after Father Bob retired, and our bishop knew it was time to consider mutual ministry (MM). In MM, a team of several people use their spiritual gifts to specialize in an area that was formerly covered by an ordained, seminary-trained priest. All members of the team are non-stipendary.

St. Matthew's was one of two pilot churches to pursue a MM pilot study. To implement this pilot study, Rev. Bev was called. She had successfully built two MM teams in the Diocese of Minnesota and already had an established curriculum. Our MM process started with input from the congregation and was very open and simple. Easel-sized sheets were taped to the Parish Hall walls for each team position (e.g., Priest, Deacon, Pastoral Care Lead, Administrator). Congregation members were asked to write the names of members whom they thought could fill these positions. No lobbying was allowed. I was blessed to be selected as one of two members who would fill the role of a Priest, the only ordained position on the team other than a Deacon. After much prayer and consultation with my husband and others I accepted.

For many small churches in the West, the MM approach is the only option to "keep the doors open". But as I wrote last week in Part 1, I did find that at St. Matthew's: "The reality of economics became a spiritual nutrient in the education to prepare congregations for the ministry of all the baptized, even for functions traditionally served by ordained clergy." (Zabriskie, 1995) I also found that the Holy Spirit was, from the start, a guiding member of our MM Team and responsible for its cohesiveness during the preparation and implementation stages. In MM, there is no hierarchy-all members of the team are equally important. This aspect taught me to stay humble, to work with others, and to always try to model the fellowship and love demonstrated in the early church.

In a small church, the only downside to MM is that the process of training must always continue, to ensure that a position that is vacated can be quickly filled. When such training takes 5 years, a small church is often not able to find enough members willing to make that commitment, especially if they are holding-down a full-time secular job during the process as I was. Regardless, I would tell those who are considering the process, if you want an adventure which requires you to be led by the Holy Spirit, consider MM! In Part 3, I will address how MM can serve as a 'spiritual nutrient' in a large church setting, such as St. Mark's.

St. Mark's Preschool

Our first Preschool Sunday was a success!  We felt blessed to have so many church members take a tour of our school.  We welcome you to come and visit anytime, and if you are interested, we are always looking for volunteers.  Many of you asked how our school is funded.  We are a Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) and we are funded through the state.  There is no cost to the children to attend. Our state funds are very limited however, so support from church members is so important. Thank you!

NEW ADULT CHRISTIAN

FORMATION CLASS EXPERIENCING

WONDER THROUGH THE SPIRITUAL SONGS OF KIRTANA

ATTENTION: IT'S NOT TOO LATE!! THIS CLASS

IS STRUCTURED SO THAT YOU CAN

PARTICIPATE WHENEVER YOU CAN ATTEND.

I invite you to join me on Sunday, October 26th after the 9:15 a.m. service in the Library for the second session of a new class. This class is addressing the wonder we can experience from music and verse through meditative listening. The material to be presented has been almost 10 years in the making, after I first heard Kirtana's CD "This Embrace". As we listen to selected songs from this CD, and four others, we will use her song lyrics to prompt discussions of scriptural passages, theological concepts, and our own life experiences. This is not a "high-brow" class-it will be deliberately structured to create an enjoyable learning environment and time for interactive fellowship.  The class involves six, successive Sunday sessions (October 19th and 26th will be AFTER the 9:15 a.m. service at 10:15 a.m.; then, when we begin the 2-service schedule in November, the class will be held between the services from 9:15-10:15 a.m. on the 2nd, 9th, 16th, and 23rd), with the last session to be held on November 23rd.  Please contact me by e-mail (sueprice@hughes.net), if you plan to attend and/or have questions.

Blessings, Rev. Sue

Important News from the Dominican Republic Mission

The Dominican Children Sponsorships are HERE!!! If you are already a sponsor --just stop by the Parish Hall after the service on Sunday October 26, 2014 and pick up your information. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor--just stop by the table and we will show you just how easy it is to become a sponsor!!!!

The actual cost for a child to attend the Children's Shelter runs approx. $675.00 per year...your sponsorship of $275.00 helps cover some of these costs such as food, uniforms, toothbrushes etc. Since no child is ever turned away, we ask you to keep this mission in your prayers.

For more information or questions, call Wendy Happney 398-1037, or Al Diaz 438-5285. Thank you from your committee members for opening your hearts to the children.

Camp Jeffery Volunteers Needed!

Camp Jeffrey was created for people with developmental differences.  For two hours (3-5PM) each Monday during the school year, we provide an encouraging sensory friendly environment that allows for a fun exploration of real life experiences.  We build relationships with each person by gaining his or her interest and attention.  We participate in games and activities that facilitate discovery of self and others.  Through play and socialization we make available opportunities for insight and allow for creative expression.  Volunteers are needed for this intimately holy ministry.  Please contact Cheryl Mueller (394-2629) or Kyle if you are interested in profound joy and sharing your gifts.

FellowshipLuck Has a New Name and a New Look.......

Worship2....
Gather in the Parish Hall for coffee or juice

A "Welcome" time after each worship service with an emphasis on welcoming new members, guests, and old friends to St. Mark's and letting them feel at home

.

Have you noticed how much we are growing here at St. Mark's?  We have a lot of new faces, new ministries and activities for you to participate in.  Our response to growing is one of pure joy.  This has us asking: "are we adjusting to the growth with new and innovative ways?"

The women of St. Mark's (ECW)  have re-imagine our hospitality at St. Mark's after the worship services on Sunday. We will continue to join everyone in the Fellowship Hall for coffee or juice and a cookie or snack but the emphasis will be more on welcoming and fellowship and less on food.  There will still be special Sundays where ministries will highlight what they do by hosting a special reception.

The ECW will continue to provide the beverages and the supplies but we really need you to sign-up to host.  The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board across from the kitchen.  We have simplified the process. As Host you will be responsible for the logistics which include:

  1. Joyfully Setting-up serving table and beverage bar, make coffee, bring a snack (or set out one ECW has provided)
  2. Joyfully wash dishes, pick-up the kitchen and remove trash.

ECW Co-Presidents Annette Fedor, Laura Gunderman and Linda Freund, are available to answer any questions you may have or assist you in anyway.

Our time together is so fleeting and precious, especially our time to meet and welcome guests and visit with our St. Mark's friends.  Most of us can remember the first time we came to St. Mark's.  More than likely we can recall someone who made us feel welcome, someone who helped us in making St. Mark's our home.  It's time for you to be that someone for someone else.  Worship2 acknowledges that our time of celebration with God and each other in the sanctuary continues in the fellowship hall.

Thank you for joining us and hosting this important "Welcome to St. Mark's" ministry.
