Tourism Update:

The 4th of July holiday is a barometer for the travel season for many parts of the country.  The same can be said in Beaufort as well.  Fripp Island, Harbor Island, and Hunting Island have all seen a very busy week thus far.

Alissa Murrie, Director of Marketing with Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort, said that they are at 100% occupancy for the week of the 4th.  "This is the start to a very busy month for vacationers staying at the resort and the week of July 4th is by far our biggest week of the year," said Alissa Murrie.

Harbor Island is also up, indicating that they are seeing occupancy hovering just above 80% capacity.

Celebrations of the 4th will take place throughout the area.

Government Affairs Update

Last week, the General Assembly was able to reach a budget compromise preventing a shutdown of the South Carolina government.  Click here to read the details and other items from the South Carolina Chamber's final update of the legislative session.

Last week, Governor Nikki Haley signed into law H. 3710 which allows for temporary professional licensing for military spouses moving to the state.  The Chamber partnered with the Columbia and Charleston Chamber's on supporting this legislation and working to move it through the General Assembly.  We have long supported legislation with this aim to make South Carolina a friendlier place for our military families.

On Tuesday evening, members of the Military Enhancement Committee met with Beaufort City Council for a discussion on sequestration.  City Council is considering a resolution presented by the MEC urging action from our national leaders to prevent these devastating cuts to our national defense set to begin in January.  Beaufort County, Town of Port Royal, Town of Bluffton and Town of Hilton Head Island have all passed the resolution.  To learn more about sequestration, visit www.beaufortmec.com.  Additionally, the MEC is urging members of the community to contact Congress to emphasize the need to find a solution to sequestration to avoid damaging our national defense and local economy.
Business Tip of the Week: "What the Health Care Decision Means For Your Small Business"

Last week, the Supreme Court ruled on the federal healthcare law.  There is much uncertainty as to how the legislation and decision will impact small businesses.  The Wall Street Journal attempts to answer some of the questions facing small businesses in this article.

South Carolina E-Verify Penalties Began July 1

The State of South Carolina has required employers to use the federal e-verify system to check the immigration status of new employees since January 1.  Starting on yesterday, July 1, South Carolina will now begin penalizing employers failing to use the e-verify system.  According to The State, penalties can range from probation to the suspension or even revocation of a business license.  Click here for more details from The State or visit http://www.llr.state.sc.us/immigration/ for more information on the law from the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.
